I wouldn't be surprised if Ryder's fall from grace years back affected the BD's chance back then. She was essentially exiled from Hollywood for over ten years. And now that she's back to respectability (thanks Stranger Things), Sony doesn't really release catalog titles anymore, except maybe a Choice Collection one now and then, and an occasional anniversary release for bigger films. It could end up with Mill Creek too perhaps. I'm not sure if it'd be a title on Criterion's radar.

Not surprised that GI is still not on Blu-ray. It's a superb film & one of my favorite '90's movies, but seems very underrated & underappreciated these days. You don't hear much discussion regarding this. However, here's hoping this gem will reach Blu one day. Though the DVD out there is acceptable - it would be nice to see this film remastered in HD.
Re: the conversation about BPD, after seeing GI multiple times - I am not convinced the W. Ryder character in the film was mentally ill. My strong impression was that her parents committed her to the institution because of her "radical" ideas - which were obviously similar to the way a lot of young people felt in the late '60's. Though this was before my time, I do remember hearing about the protests against the war (which was very unpopular at the time), the drug use, etc. - a lot of the younger "hippies" were rebelling against the older "establishment", and that came through very well in the film. I feel that WR's parents in the movie disagreed with her thought process & were trying to control her by institutionalizing her. But, I don't see her character as mentally ill - unless I'm missing something. To me, that was one of the entire points of the movie - WR's parents (who represented "the establishment") were committing her because her ideas posed a threat to their very conservative lifestyle. After watching the film again it’s a shame that So y hasn’t released this on blu yet.
They’ve been re-releasing movies lately and it doesn’t make sense to me since there’s known stars in this like Jolie and Ryder, the director is getting more popular (Indy 5!), and with people caring about female representation this film checks that box. I really hope it gets a release soon. This and Mangold’s debut film Heavy need to be on blu. |
