99% of current and old movies are only made in 2-D. Yes 2-D movies will be released for decades just like black and white movies are still around in a color world. Not all black and white movies are colorized do to cost and quality issues. Most 2-D movies will not be upconverted to 3-D do to cost and quality issues.

In the future maybe 90% or more of the movies released in the theater might be filmed in 3-D. Then 3-D will start to become more popular in the home in 2012 and beyond.

For at least a decade every new 3-D film will also have a 2-D version in theaters and for all new BLU-RAY releases.

2-D will be around for decades since there is around 100 years of films shot in 2-D.

i just read in an article that toshiba's new tv utilizing the a cell processor will be able to convert 2d to 3d pictures automatically.

so it may be that we can have our cake and eat it too once the newer sets roll out with this sort of technology 3-5 years from now.

Do you seriously think a processor is going to be able to do something the human brain can barely do? It has no reliable way of determining depth, this will be an embarrassment for Toshiba.
