Default Shutter Island (Spoilers)

Seeing as we don't have an actual discussion thread for this movie, here we go. Looking forward to another great film from Scorsese. Reminder to please use spoiler tags (at least until the movie has been released wide for a little while).

Hey,

This is a bad news about Shutter Island. ITS NO LONGER SET FOR A 2009 SLATE.

Thought of posting this in the other Shutter Island thread but this is a news, and some of you may miss it.

Quote:
Paramount has shocked nearly everyone by moving Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island out of 2009 awards contention to a February 19th, 2010 release date. The move is such a huge surprise because everyone expected the film to be a big player in the Oscar race. But now with a February release date, the movie’s award chances are slimmer, and of course, the film is disqualified for most of the 2009 Awards altogether. So why did Paramount make the change/move? Is Shutter Island not the Oscar contender that everyone had hoped it might be? Answers after the jump.

The film tested highly, in the high 80’s/low 90’s and even Scorsese brought the running time down to under 2 hours. Even a /Film reader who reviewed an early cut of the film mentioned the potential Award-winning performances. So why did Paramount move a film with mainstream and award potential? Blame the recession. According to Nikki Finke’s source, “Paramount told the filmmakers it doesn’t have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to $60M necessary to market a big awards pic like this.” Wow…

So instead the studio has decided to put Shutter Island in The Silence of the Lambs slot. And as we all know, Silence of the Lambs went on to win five Oscars in 1992, despite the mid-February handicap. The thought is that now that the Academy is nominating 10 films for Best Picture, Shutter Island will still have a chance for the 2010 Academy Awards, and the studio will better be able to fund an award campaign at that time.

I shouldn't say Enjoy this time.

More on this BUMP.

Well even a huge movie studio like Paramount Dreamworks has to be careful with their finances during a recession, especially with a big budget movie. I still might see this next year, who knows?

you know Paramount is hurting a lot actually, they even sold their Kings Dominions Amusement Parks because they couldn't afford to maintain the parks.

I really don't think it will, if the performances are as strong as they said I am sure it will do good at the awards.

Went to a screening of this tonight. I liked it a lot, the ending is something awesome. I have a question for those who have seen it/read the book, (major spoiler)
[Show spoiler]How did Teddy previously know Jackie Earl Haley's character? When he talked with him in the cell, he was surprised to see him there & said he was going to get him out. I don't remember him being in any scene before it. Or was it because he as his real self, Andrew, knew him from the prison and had gotten in a fight with him? Secondly, do you think that in the end, Andrew had been cured, but he decided to have the lobotomy because he didn't want to live with knowing his wife killed his children? That's what I took from it, but I wasn't sure.

I can't quote you because it'll spoil it for me. Hmm when I was reading the book I thought the ending was quite predictable. No thought really, it's the obvious twist. I HOPE SCORSESE CHANGED IT! I need to see this movie now.

I went to a free screening of Shutter Island and was surprised at the fact that it felt like I was watching a Kubrick movie rather then Scorsese. The movie is very similar to the book. I am hopeful that everybody will enjoy it. I was surrounded by like a billion Golden Girls & older men. They walked out scratching their heads. Nonetheless, it will be a day one purchase for me once the Blu comes out...

American Psycho man is known for appreciating good movies so I'll take his review under consideration. It seems and correct me if I'm wrong, but he enjoyed it. I think the main fault of the film is the source material because it's a tad predictable but I believe Scorsese could really make it an engaging film and the cast is really good. And thank god Howard Shore isn't composing this one. He has to be one of the most boring composers out there. I had a hard time getting through Gangs of New York & The Aviator because the score was just so undistinguishable.

And besides Cape Fear was really fun and I enjoyed it a lot and Deniro's performance was just mindblowing. I hated Nick Nolte in that movie and Cape Fear really didn't feel like a Scorsese movie but it was good. I feel Shutter Island could be the same fun.

Now these are all based off of assumptions, I guess to assure I have no worries to see this film.
