Terrible. Now I have fears of getting new tires.

Had to go check my tires, 07 and 08. Tread is good for another year or so. I'll definitely pay attention when I replace them. They are high speed performance tires so I hope they have a bit more stringent quality control to adhere to especially when you push them to 150mph.

My dad got tires once that dry rotted in 2 years. I won't say from where, but after that, we don't go there any more.

great find, I worked at Kauffman tire for almost two years and was never informed of how to tell the age of a tire. We were required to fill out cards with the DOT # on them but never told what it meant other than it was the tires serial #

I'm kind of concerned now about if I put any really old tires on cars, some of the tires in the shop you could tell were really old but we always sold them as new

This was originally reported on back in May 2008.

After all of the press this received back then, I'd be surprised of reputable dealers are continuing to sell "aged" tires. Still, it's good information to have and something you should check when you purchase new tires.

Great informative post OP!

I always check very carefully when I buy tires to see if they aren't used, but I never thought about checking to see how old my tires have been sitting in the factory.

EDIT: I'm going to link this to my thread as well.
