Oooh another classic film onto Blu-Ray. I wonder what the transfer will be like?!

After reading all the raving reviews for this supposed "British" classic, I decided to blind buy it. Very well done, but it was just okay. The biggest flattery I can give to The Railway Children is that it would be a better film if it had been animated by Hayao Miyazaki. It did feel like a Ghibli live-action film I suppose, but other than that, it drags a bit. And I was distracted by the 11-year old sister in this film that was actually played by a 20 year old actress. Every time she was on the screen, I was trying to see her as an 11-year old, but I couldn't. But it was a nice film with beautiful scenery, and it was nice to see one of my favorite Fawlty Towers characters (Mr. Huchinson) pop up in this film who is played by the actor Bernard Cribbins. He's probably the best character in this whole film.

The blu-ray is amazing. Optimum did such a good job on this blu-ray - the video quality and audio quality is just what you would want to expect from a blu-ray company that remasters old films.

The extras are few - a little documentary, and some interviews with the cast..

Have this on my wanted list, but I can wait until the inevitable price drop (£7.99 say) as it's still at £14 at most places.

i love this film, a real 'quaint gem' of 70's British cinema, the likes of which we'll never see again.
Makes a great double bill with Swallows and Amazons.

United Kingdom The Railway Children (StudioCanal Vintage Classics) - 06 April 2020

I emailed Studiocanal about this new release and have just received this reply, confirming that it is just a reissue of the previous 40th anniversary release with new cover artwork.
Thank you very much for your interest in the Railway Children. It is indeed a refreshment of the artwork in celebration of the 50th anniversary and the transfer is the same as on the previous release.
The listed bonus features are identical to the previous release.

The transfer on the previous release is extremely good in my opinion, but it would have been nice to have a new bonus feature or two to justify an upgrade.

Imagine if they put in the effort that Second Sight did for The Amazing Mr Blunden...

Paid £2 for a sealed copy of the 40th anniversary release of the film just over a month back.

If you have the 40th release, it’s £10 for the latest cover art then...think I’ll pass, as nice at it is.

All “non-essential Amazon” deliveries are now delayed. My order of The Elephant Man will now arrive 15th instead of 6th April release date.
