Default South Pacific 1958.. how frequent are the color filters?

South Pacific Blu-ray

South Pacific Blu-ray Review

The Silver Screen article on South Pacific

I'm thinking of getting this movie so I was wondering how often those colored filters were used in the movie? 10%, 50%, 30%?

Angry Annoying color changes

I watched this movie some time ago. As I remember, every musical number is color-filtered, and the color actually changes during the number. Very annoying.

You are 52 year late to complain about this.

Actually, the filters are annoying when you see a normal broadcast on TV, at least I have always found it so. BUT on Blu, they look much better.

It's all the moments that aren't in filters and that are in classic saturated color that makes South Pacific beautiful to me. But I happen to love the look of 70mm films in general and so I definitely enjoy it.

I suppose the degree of annoyance (or un-annoyance) for the color filters scenes is, like anything, simply a matter of personal taste. I think in my case I don't mind them because a) I mostly love the film for its otherwise vivid and beautiful colors in the "normal" scenes and because b) I just tend to treat the filtered scenes as a "unique" charm to the normal look of the film. In other words, one can either look at them as a glass half full or a glass half empty.

Of course, if one doesn't like 70mm, Todd-AO widescreen films, classic 50's era movies or the general vividness or theme of South Pacific to begin with, then indeed, the filtered scenes will likely only make one not enjoy such a film even more...

Thanks for the reply's! Yeah, I like the 70mm films with the rich colors so I'm tempted to just get it even though I'm not a fan of filters of any kind.

This is perplexing.....I have a single disc Blu-ray that I bought from Amazon what it was dropped to $10 maybe a year and a half ago. I have scenes (during the nothing like a dame sequence + more) that shift considerably in quality from scene to scene....The ones that are bad are REALLY bad if I remember right, VHS bad.....I'll have to go back and look again, since its been a while I have looked at it.. I think I might have got a wrong disc...... Thanks for refreshing my memory to look at this again...

It seems like you have the longer roadshow version. I never watched it on my BD, but it reportedly had much lower quality on the additional scenes.

It has lower quality, period. Although it's on a blu-ray disc, it's the DVD transfer, so resolution is only 480p. It's actually encoded as 720x480 on the disc.

Was the digital master both the DVD and the BD were made from only 480p?

Was the Blu-ray box marked 480?

What shame. Todd-AO negatives can approach 8K, far higher resolution that Blu-ray.

Since Joshua Logan finally decided that he would like the filters removed, although it was impractical at the time, I think the next Blu-ray (or better) package should include a disk with the filters digitally removed, if that is really possible, as well as one with the filters in place. Logan's change of mind could be explained in the Special Features.

To me, the filters were just plain bad! One of the most beautiful locations in the world was cheapened by the filters. The music/lyrics would have provided the fantasy element. Oklahoma! (and, later, The Sound of Music) demonstrated that the ultra-realism of Todd-AO worked well with musicals. Granted, Oklahoma! had a presentational dream sequence that was not realistic, but the design of the dance venue was in keeping with the fantastic nature of the sequence ... they didn't just plop a filter over the lens when shooting in realistic setting.

I noticed that the new release is not available right now. Here's hoping it's available again soon.
