Default Super 8 Review Thread (Spoilers)

AICN is reporting that Moriarty(Drew) from HitFix is reporting that a teaser Trailer for the Cloverfield followup will be shown BEFORE Iron Man 2!!!!

http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/2008-12-...jj-abrams-film

This title HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED.

MORE INFO!!!

Quote:
Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there's an alien creature in the frame. Our sources also say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008's Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel).

Will it be on the IMAX screenings of Iron Man 2, or only the regular?

They aren't saying. It's a HUGE rumor right now. Supposedly even the film crews didn't realize what they were working on.

I love advertising so this just tickles my fancy. That initial Cloverfield teaser was pretty unique.

Hope it's true! If so that means we get this and a new trailer for Inception before it!

I really hope this rumor makes the transition to fact come the 7th!

I have been waiting a long time for even an inkling as to when we could expect a Cloverfield followup.

And now for the obligatory rock smilie that accompanies news that I approve of (I realy need to design my own "Seal Of Approval"... I could teach it to dance and do tricks in exchange for fish! )

I agree, it almost seems impossible for no word to get out until now.

I liked it...but thought it was just way too cheesy in the end and some "roll my eyes" moments of just absurd writing...but overall enjoyable! Great acting, however! The kids were awesome!

My take on the locket:

[Show spoiler]I don't feel the alien itself was able to control metal. That's why the alien needed to turn the water tower into a huge electromagnet. Then that magnet was used to draw metal to the water tower. As the magnetic field increased, more and more objects were drawn in. Finally, the correct magnetic field was created to draw in all of the cubes that made up the alien's ship. That's what he was after.

If the locket and chain were made out of silver or white gold, they would NOT be magnetic. And that's why the locket wasn't attracted/pulled to the water tower at first. It was only after the alien had attracted all of the cubes, rebuilt his ship, AND gone inside of the ship, that the locket was finally being pulled toward the water tower.

Since the alien was now inside of his ship, it was my feeling that his ship gave him power or control over metal that wasn't magnetic. Using that power, he pulled the locket from Joe's pocket. I think the taking of the locket symbolized two things:

1) When they came in contact with each other, the alien had made a psychic connection with Joe's thoughts and feelings By taking the locket, the alien was telling Joe it was time to let his mom go and move on with his life.

2) By letting go of the locket, Joe was doing exactly what the alien was suggesting. Letting his mom go so he could spend the energy and emotion toward relationships with the living.

4/5. That might change whenever I get to view it on Blu-Ray though. I agree on most all of the points in the other 4 star reviews on this thread. The acting was excellent across the board. Elle Fanning especially owned her part, but Joel Courtney and Riley Griffiths kept up their end as well. Ryan Lee was a hoot and a half as the pyromaniac freak of the group. The cinematography, music, effects and every other technical aspect of the film were all top of the line and made for an at times gorgeous picture. Yes I can nitpick if I really want to. For example,
[Show spoiler]How did the military manage to keep the alien in captivity when they couldn't even shoot it at the end of the film? The thing can throw off their targeting for crying out loud. However, that is a rather minor flaw in a film with its fair share of minor flaws. To err is human.
I won't nitpick this thing to death though. My attitude may change with another viewing, maybe the score will go up. The movie provided fun, and really nothing more. It was a big throwback to the films Steven Spielberg made in the 70's and 80's, with many shots being instantly recognizable for the films they were homaging. Super 8 was, overall, a fun experience and one I wouldn't mind experiencing again. Also, the lens flares really didn't seem that ubiquitous to me, so I had no problem there.

Super 8 easily gets 5*'s from me. Loved it. It was a great ride.

Have to say Elle Fanning's not only a top notch actress like her big sis, but her zombie skills are impressive.

I went to see it and I was happy with the way it turned out. Sure it might have dragged a bit in some areas, but that didn't hurt the film much at all for me.

[Show spoiler]If anything made the movie worse, it was how it was somewhat predictable and almost the same concept as Cloverfield minus the shaky camera. You hade a monster terrifying a city, a corrupt government/air force, and I know there were some other things that had me getting some feelings of deja vu. Not to mention it was written and directed by Abrams and Spielberg like Cloverfield. I enjoyed Cloverfield, so this was enjoyable as well, but as I said, predictable at times. The fat kid friend was hilarious though. His use of the word "MINT" to describe his film scenes made me LOL, especially after he said it for like the fourth time in about ten seconds. Also, who said "douche" back in the late 70's? lol

Overall, I enjoyed it.

7/10

Just came back from a movie....and after reading so much hype and hearing how it's the best film of 2011 I was disappointed.

The movie was not THAT great as I wanted it to be and no, I didn't expect super crazy sci-fi blow them up flick.

The main problem with the film is that it can't find the place and establish itself as either a drama or a sci fi movie. It was somewhere in the middle but since it was about the kids, I started to lose interest in the
[Show spoiler]alien/creature
.

My favorite scene was the
[Show spoiler]acting scene at the rail station
and moments like that kept me to watch the movie more. I wanted more relationship/first love story than a freaking pointless "sci fi".

Good but not great.

3/5.
