And thank you for pretending to have an informed opinion--

I'm sure someone else will now step up and explain in layman's terms the basic legal difference between bribing a company to make something they normally don't, and bribing it to NOT make something they normally do...

From Bill Hunt's 2 cents:

Quote:
By the way, a quick side comment here. A number of HD-DVD fans have e-mailed us to cry fowl over our issue with Microsoft offering financial incentives to studios to go HD-DVD only, when (they say) Sony must surely be doing the same thing on the Blu-ray Disc side. Here's the difference, and it's why we continue to flag it: Sony pumping money to various studios and parties to promote Blu-ray Disc make logical sense to us. Toshiba doing the same thing to promote HD-DVD, that makes logical sense too. Sony was involved in creating Blu-ray and has a financial stake in it. Likewise, Toshiba created HD-DVD and has a financial stake there. Where does Microsoft's interests lie? Microsoft did not create HD-DVD. Until not so very long ago (prior to these formats coming to market), as they themselves acknowledge, they actually supported both formats. So why are they putting so much money into HD-DVD now? Not only are they putting money into HD-DVD, they're basically the only party that's keeping the format alive. Left to their own financial means, we find it hard to believe that Toshiba would be able to keep pricing its hardware so low - especially given the fact that they've had to adjust their sales projections for the format downward in recent months. And without the "financial incentives" offered by Microsoft, would ANY of the HD-DVD exclusive studios still be HD-DVD exclusive? We doubt it. So what does Microsoft have to gain from all this? That's the question that keeps sticking in our minds. By making these deals with the studios, aren't they getting exclusive access to new high-def transfers that they'll be able to turn around and offer on Xbox Live - transfers that they themselves are encoding in VC-1 for the studios at a discounted rate or even for free? And as we've said many times now, doesn't Microsoft's download service stand to gain if this format war continues long enough to discourage most consumers from adopting high-def discs at all? That's the difference between Sony and Microsoft - Sony is heavily supporting their own format for obvious reasons. Microsoft is heavily supporting someone else's format for their own reasons, some of which are obvious (VC-1, HDi) and some not so much.
Nothing to add.

a bribe is a bribe no matter how you try and sugar coat it its just that sony seem to have quite a record of bribing people to either keep shut about there poor quality control or offer bribes to push there singers/products.and what about the sony CORP SHUTTING DOWN LIK SANG FOR SELLING SONY PRODUCTS ?

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

Time to Sony bash again.......I see these same stupid threads here and in AVSforum constantly......big, bad, Sony.....big, bad, MS.....big, bad, Apple.....boo, hoo, hoo......whoa is me......

All corporations have to abide by laws. If they break the law and are caught they will pay the penalty.

Sony has made and continues to make great and lousy products just like every other major electronics company out there.

disgrace.
No. Blame the court for handing down the decision (Which I think was a tad severe) and Lik-Sang for being dumb enough to breach contract.

Sure looks like the British courts agreed w/ Sony. I guess all the British courts are corrupt too? Wait, how is this a disgrace? You're an idiot.

a lot of companies around the world have done business like this, bribery is not a new way of doing business, which is why there are laws to prevent it. eventhough, i own a PS3, i refuse to buy many sony products b/c i personally feel that the quality of their product has fallen and deteriorated since the 90's. people preceive sony as brand name, which it is, but i'm not going to pay a premium for something i can get for less which is also of better quality.

OK, the first story about Sony "bribing" stores to sell PS3 is just a post by some guy, not from a reputable media outlet. The story has an inflammatory headline but actually only says that Sony sponsors sales contests and rewards the Gamestop that sells the most PS3s. Uh, that isn't bribery even in the most liberal definition, jackass. That's standard business practice. All companies incent people to sell.

Strike 1.

The second story, about radio DJ payola, is also from a nobody. It isn't an actual news story, it's an opinion column on a no-name website run buy a musician who just might be bitter because he can't sell shit. If the story were confirmed by a major outlet, which it isn't, it's been known for 40 years that the radio music business is run by payola. Top 40 pop is a scam and always has been. Just too bad there is no real story here though. The NYTimes article listed later only points out that they are being sued. Do you have any idea how many times M$ gets sued every year?

Strike 2.

The last link refers to a minor story about an alleged bribe in China between PR people and newspapers? Come on. This is small-time and par for the course in China. An alleged, small scandal in China from 2 years ago? Weak.

Strike 3

Then you say the list goes on and on... well nearly all of your links are to the radio DJ issue. hardly an expansive list. You want expansive... try M$.

Don't mind them. They're just tag-team-trolls visiting from AVM$forum or Hidefdigest.

My main issue with this whole fiasco is that Paramount caved for a measley $150 Millon! That is chump change in the entertainment industry. Now $150 Millon going in to an individual's pocket... That makes more sense to me.
