Default Curious About Bluray Format On Future Gaming Consoles

Ok so Sony basically owns the bluray format, correct? So if the next Nintendo or Microsoft system wants to utilize bluray discs (I mean they can't keep using DVDs forever) do they have to ask Sony's permission or pay Sony to use the Bluray format? Do all makers of bluray drives (panasonic, lg, oppo, etc) have to pay Sony some type of royalty? Just some things I was pondering. Thanks.

Incorrect.

So, yeah. That pretty much answers everything else.

Not much to add outside of the first 2 posts, but does anyone have a good estimate of when the next generation will be debuting? I think the software medium will be an interesting one, and my best guess would put it as bluray and HDD heavy. DVD playback will still be around, but as the primary medium? I personally don't think so.

Hopefully PS4 does debut until 2015 at the very earliest! The PS3/developers are just getting warmed up!

There was only 4 years between the Xbox and the Xbox 360. That would have been a 2009 release if Microsoft had followed the same pattern. 6 years between the Playstation 2 and 3. Why should there be 9 years between console generations this time? Truth is the current gen of consoles are great but there is still plenty of room for improvement and will be for a long time. Most games are 720p 2D only (with future 3D games possibly being downconvert to a standard def resolution to componsate the second eye render), most in game audio is lossy, and graphics that have plenty of room to grow.

Obviously the current generation of consoles will be milked for all there worth with Microsoft Natal and Sonys Playstation Move being given a chance on the current platforms before any new console comes out. But Id say that a 2012 release data is most likely.

my guess would be 2012/2013 but who knows, I think 2015 is a bit late especialy for earliest. But let's face it, it also depends on the other players. If a new Wii or Xbox comes out next year Sony won't wait 4 years for a new PS.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a new console next year from Nintendo.

Actually, I would be surprised. We haven't seen a "new console" from Nintendo in almost 10 years.

All joking aside, I'm also very curious to see what direction the next generation takes as far as the media. I personally don't think we're at the point of digital downloads being the everyday standard, and HDD would likely still be the more expensive option. Is flash card-style media even being considered?

I think they have to pay to Sony for getting the permission. Because Sony is the owner of this but if Sony makes it free for some professional users than that will not any stuff. But I don't think so that it would be happen so anyone who wants BlueRay format should pay some royalty to Sony.

1) There will not be a new PS for a long time. The Developers have barely even figured out how to use half of what is stuck in that thing, there is a lot more power that has yet to be unleashed.

2) You'll see a new Nintendo console in the next couple of years, but it will likely be new version of the Wii with anti-aliasing, HDMI, and larger storage (backwards compatable goes without saying).

Xbox720-- If they don't use a blu-ray, they'll have to spend quite a bit to create a proprietary dvd based format, and by then, the 720 will be way too much machine for a dvd-based format or in other words way too powerful for a storage medium that can only hold so much. They'll want to upgrade to blu. But if so, they'll be paying sony royalties for the disc so Sony will be making $$$$ from MS.

Wii 2-- Nintendo has recently said that they are thinking about putting 3d on their next console. If so, that's basically a lot more processing, more storage needed so again, blu-ray would be a great advantage for the next Wii. And of course the royalties will be sent over to sony so that's a good thing in my book. (ps3 fanboy)

No reason they shouldnt use it. DVD wont be enough storage for games in the future, unless they want to span games over several discs which would be more expensive I think...

Several games have already been comprimised this gen due to the limitations of DVD on the 360. I doubt they'd go three generations in a row without evolving (They are the only one to even go to without evolving and its hampered games)
