USA 360 Slim: RROD now called "REOD".

Xbox 360 Slim - "Red Eye" replaces "Red Ring of Death"

By Gerald Lynchon June 21, 2010

Ask any Xbox 360 owner what their biggest fear is, and you'll get a universal shriek of "Red Ring of Death", the glowing sign that your console is giving up the ghost, an all-too-common occurrence. Thankfully, the RROD is no longer present on the new Xbox 360 Slim console. Frighteningly however, it's been replaced with the "Red Eye", a glowing red dot on the console's front that appears when trouble is brewing.

The Red Eye also has a partner in crime too - an error message to prepare the user for the worst. It reads:

"The Xbox 360 is shutting down to protect the console from insufficient ventilation. You can turn the console back on after the power light stops flashing."

Considering just how many people were affected by the RROD on the old style console, you'd think that Microsoft would have really worked at fixing this machine-killing ventilation problem. So far, it seems they've just repackaged the old menace, a wolf in a red sheep's clothing.

Xbox 360 Slim Overheating Issues Already Discovered?

The Xbox 360 Slim which was announced and released during this year’s E3 might already be having problems.

Images have been discovered on a Forum showing an Xbox 360 Slim with what is believed to be the “Red Dot of Death”. The Forum, NeoGaf has not confirmed whether or not the images are 100% real, but the images posted show one of the Xbox 360 Slim with the RDOD, and another image showing the error message on the Dashboard.

Take a look for yourselves and decide:

Let the threadcrapping and 360 bashing begin...

I see nothing in that article that confirms there are ANY problems with the new slim. In fact, it's not really an article at all. Seems like a lot of supposition and assumptions on the "author's" part. Electronic equipment generates heat. If not properly vented, ANY piece of equipment can overheat. Having a process to safely shut down an overheating system seems prudent to me, versus letting it continue to overheat and cause irreparable damage.

Why don't we just wait and see if the slims DO have any problems before automatically writing them off?

I thought they were gonna call it the slim ring of death (sounds cool, doesn't it?)

Seriously though, I think it's a bit too early to tell. We'll have to wait until these new models have been in circulation for about a year or so to start getting a good idea of their reliability

This may have been staged. No one knows but, this story is gaining traction very quickly.

After examining the picture closely along with the video, I don't see a realistic reason why it should be overheating unless it's the same design flaw that hampered the original 360.

Time will tell I guess.

My thoughts, exactly. There are so many fanbois out there who will do anything to slam whatever system is not "their's". It's very easy to cause a piece of electronics to overheat...if you really wanted to. Let's just wait until this time next year and see how the new slim has performed in real-world applications.

A person could have covered the vents and left it on (until it overheats) and then uncovered the vents when the error message pops up and took the pic. Not saying it's not legit but, it can easily be staged.

Really?

People would dump $300 just to slam on their 'competition'? Especially repeatedly?

If that's the case, then why didn't the 360 fans brick a few PS3's when the Slim came out?

The fact that it's sliding in the direction of the console that already has massive reliability issues isn't a coincidence.

Exactly. That was Microsoft's biggest mistake with the original 360, they didn't have a system in place to stop it from overheating to the point of "death." This actually makes me feel better about playing on a new 360, the fact that it'll warn me when it needs to cool down.

Secondly, while I think this was probably staged, I don't think it necessarily had to be by a Sony fanboy who wanted to make the 360 look bad. It could've just been someone who wanted to be the first to show the REOD. Although I'm not sure it can be called the REOD since the message clearly pops up before death. So maybe "Red Eye Warning of Death" would be more fitting. REWD. If you pronounce it like "rude," then you could say that your 360 gave you a REWD message.

i see no reason why a rich snobby kid wouldnt waste 300 on doing something like this. i saw a picture of loch ness once....

in order to have 'widespread issues' or to even suggest that the new model is going to have the same problems, its going to take more than one system shown on the internet. all electronics will have ones that break easily, quickly and for no reason. there were oppo blu ray players, onkyo receivers, well you get the point.

although i found it hilarious when one of m$ cosoles at e3 last year in thier booth got the rrod, i havent seen any reports of a wide spread issues with the last model of the phat 360. makes me wonder why it would start all over again. oh yeah, 360 haters....

I see the PS3 fanboys are already out looking to bash the new 360. I thought there was a warning about coming into this forum and spreading FUD. I wonder how long it would take for me to get suspended or banned if I went into the PS3 forum and did the same thing.

Red Eye Warning of Impending Near Death.

REWIND...

Maybe not the message Microsoft would want to convey.

Since the beginning I never had a problem with my Xbox 360 S 250GB.

Xbox LIVE marketplace has so many games that I wish I had MS points ready to buy them games, gotta check the prices of 800/1200/etc points.

You might check eBay, they 4000 points for around $40 with free shipping. I'm actually considering taking the leap and picking them up myself.

The 360 will never have a BD player. MS has already stated this numerous times.
