I couldn't come up with a good title, so bear with me.
When I first got into blu, I told myself I would only buy , new sci-fi, action, blow em' up type movies. After seeing the quality of some of the older movies, I started looking at them with a different eye. My personal belief is that blu-ray may be the best movies may ever look. New or old. So I have been thinking about them in more a film preservation light. I have been looking at older titles and thinking I should get this one or that one for the historical value. There are many Criterion titles for example I am interested in. It has been an interesting shift in thought. What do you all think about it? Or am I just a goofball? ![]() Last edited by bsmith6470; 06-22-2010 at 02:47 AM. |

i know some people who say, "blu-ray is only good for new, loud, expensive films. everything else is pointless on blu" and won't even look / rent any film on blu other than a sci-fi / action / adventure film.
i personally never saw it that way. and now that prices are dropping at an amazing rate for every type of blu, there's no genre i'll leave out on blu. and to be honest, i believe blu-ray will be the last medium i will buy films on. i don't need films to look any different than they do here (i actually get creeped out by what could be next ![]() NO GENRE GETS LEFT BEHIND! ![]() Last edited by iam1bearcat; 06-22-2010 at 05:23 PM. |

I just recently got a blu ray player and I felt the same way at first. I figured I would only buy movies where the blu ray picture or audio would make a big difference over the dvd, such as the audio in some action films. My collection is small but I just started buying some used ones on Amazon, all $10 or less, so I will probably not limit myself like I had originally planned. Which is bad because I already have a list of blu rays I want when I can find them cheap enough and the list is growing. I also traded in/sold some of my dvds so I feel like I can justify it a little more. I do have Netflix though so if I'm not sure if I want to buy something, I just rent the blu ray first and then add it to my list of ones to buy.

This is pretty much my exact situation too. It was only a few years ago that I started getting into movies beyond passing entertainment, but I never bought DVDs because I knew there was a superior format out. Now that I can watch blurays on my PS3 I have a newly found appreciation for collecting movies I love.

Blu-ray is actually only about half the resolution of the actual film stock itself. So, regardless of the human ability to perceive such differences in detail, films can and will look better eventually. Blu-ray is "for now" medium. It's hard not to love. And I'll put up a fight when it's time to upgrade again, but it will happen eventually.

i used to buy DVDS because they were the best quality option at the time.
I know buy only blus because they're the best quality option now. I've never seen the point in "only getting action/newer movies". The best looking discs i own are easily movies from 20-30 years ago. |

Well I started collecting movies within the last few years starting with dvd so that being said when I made the transition to blu I only had about 90-100 movies in my collection. So when I went to blu I told myself I am only going to buy movies I dont already own on dvd. There are a couple of exceptions I have made for movies I love to death or if the blu is cheap enough and the quality upgrade is big enough I will make the switch anyway. But overall that has made it very easy for me. As for what films I buy I will buy anything that I actually like to watch and will watch more than once. No point in buying something you will watch one time. Though at this point I have a couple of blu movies I bought and have yet to watch.

While I first opted to ignore this thread, I realized that I do have a belief.
It starts with why movies are made. They are made for a theatrical experience (mind you I said movies not TV blu-ray). My belief is..... Wait for it...... I want on Blu EXACTLY what was presented in theaters with their first print (if not digital) . Meaning whatever it looked like in the movie house and the director was happy with it, that is what I want on blu. Not what I "think" it should look like, or how clear or un-grainy it should be. I just want what I saw in the theater. Many IMO are spoiled HT owners who do not go to the movies then complain that SPR did not look good when in all actuality it looked EXACTLY as it did in the theater. Blu -ray is not about how you think it should look but how close did they get to replicating the ORIGINAL presentation. |

I'm like the OP and others where I only buy big action/special effects/ etc... on bluray.
Now I truly believe that bluray just makes the movie look awesome and sometimes it is annoying watching a DVD. However I will never buy a comedy/romantic/normal no effect movie on bluray. I only collect special movies that I would know I will watch over and over. These movies are a few so I probably would never have a huge library. Just like back in DVD days, I did not pass the 200 movies. |

I am not sure what my "belief" is, but I do know I prefer to get something in Blu-ray than in audio. I also believe that I read reviews more now before buying something I would just have gone ahead and bought on DVD because Blu-ray quality done right is fantastic...done wrong can be "What the's point of doing it on Blu if you don't care, studio?!"
One thing I do believe is that Blu-ray has changed my shopping habits. I seldom buy any DVDs now (I used to buy a great amount!), and that includes classic titles that will likely never be on Blu. The econony is one reason, but there is also the fact that I have less tolerance with standard def now. I also don't buy as many Blus now because while a Blu can look great, I believe there are too many titles out there that shouldn't be bothered with releasing on Blu when they should be releasing more classics (and doing a great job of restoring them). I spend most of my money on classic films now. Last edited by bluskies; 06-22-2010 at 07:53 PM. |

I still will buy some old movies on dvd, and I won't upgrade some films I already own on dvd because they still look very good. However pretty much every other buy now will be blu ray. With blu rays though I find myself looking for reviews before a purchase, which is something I never did before.
