Star Trek TOS audio issues?

I'd like to eventually buy these TOS sets, but I'm concerned about some of the audio drop-out and low volume dialogue issues, I read about on certain revirews.

Anybody here with those sets have these issues?

According to some forum posts on Amazon, firmware updates seem to have fixed the problem.

Just checking on this before I buy them.

Well, that's what I'm wondering. So does the PS3 work best or worst, as it seems a lot of people complaining about the audio are using just TV speakers.

I was playing season one the other day on my PS3 and a 2.1 sound system and it was not good. To hear the actors talk you need to turn it up, but when music comes on you get blasted and have to turn it down. I think it would be fine on a 5.1 system, but not on a stereo 2 speaker system.

Yeah, it seems to be a problem with how the discs are encoded with the 7.1 mix that don't play well thru 2.0 speaker sets.

Maybe I am slow, but you would someone set it to HD-Master Audio and play it through 2 speakers?

You could say that about most films. I like how the newer receivers in the last few years use Dolby Pro Logic to turn a 1.0 or 2.0 mix into a 5.1 or 7.1 mix, but I only use it for lossy tracks. If a mono or stereo track is lossless then I leave it just the way it is even though I have a 7.1 setup.

Well, here's the first one! I have all 3 seasons on Blu-ray and they play great on my PS3 -- no dropouts or other problems.

Over-all the audio is softer than on some other discs, but the sound is very good and well-balanced. I've only heard them on my surround-sound system, not through the TV speakers.

I've played Season 1 on my Sony 350 also without any problems. I am going through a receiver and separate speakers - not the T.V. speakers.

know... but if you have 2.0 u might as well just listen to the original mono mix. no point in 7.1->2.0 downmix.

Very little or no work was done on the original mono, it's incredibly thin sounding by comparison, even on a downmix

I can somewhat understand your frustration, but on the other hand, users can't lie and say a disc that works, doesn't work on their setup, now can they?
Also, I think it's useful to have a maximum of people what various players and setups post their findings. This can often be an indication then of the source of the problem: player issue, faulty master, firmware issue, etc.

I also think the PS3 often comes out as a player that experiences the least amount of playback issues, but I think that's related to the fact it's probably the player that gets updated the most by far and when issues arise, a firmware to fix it is often released within the week.

So yeah, I understand it gets annoying but just think of it as a necessary evil to help determine the exact cause of a problem.

I actually had problems with Season 3 on my PS3, and I read a few reports of others experiencing the same, both on seasons 2 and 3. Basically the show would just pause, all by itself. It wasn't a freeze - I could simply press Pause or Play on the remote, and the show would resume without trouble. This would even happen on the looping main menu if I let it sit there! However, disabling BD-Live completely fixed the problem. Not a single pause from that point on. Others reported the same after disabling BD-Live themselves.

That is the only issue I've heard of with any of the Star Trek TOS BD sets, and it's easily fixed, so I don't think you'll have any trouble.
