Default What Film Made You Love Films?

Idk if that's confusing but what film made you grow a love for films? What film made you want to explore more films and find other great films?

I hope this isn't too confusing, I didn't know the best way to word this.

For me it was 'Blue velvet'.Drew me in like no other movie.Loved star wars, but it is not in the same league. After blue velvet,I watched Eraserhead since it was the same director, and that may have been my best movie experience ever.Love the sensation when one can't withdraw ones eyes from the movie. The ones I can say that about is:'Great expectations' by D.Lean,'To live and die in LA','Wild at heart' and 'Color of money'.Ofcourse those are the ones I can remember vividly. Not to detract from other movies which I find great (Apocalypse now,Goodfellas,Lawrence of arabia,2001,etc.).

im not sure if this is what you mean, but the first movie i can think of where i really appreciated the actual craft of storytelling/filmaking vs just being entertained was probably Rear Window.

Vertigo and Full Metal Jacket

Saw them both at 12 or 13. First exposure to Hitch and Kubrick and my mind was completely blown. I'd never seen movies like this. Until then i was like any other child of the 80's, being fixated on Rambo, Terminator, and Predator-type movies.

Forgot about Vertigo. It is a supreme viewing-experience.Fell more gradually into Full metal jacket which I consider the best warmovie from the grunts perspective.

I cannot say it was one special film that made me realize how much I love movies but the advent of home video. I got my first VCR when they originally came out and it had a remote connected to the player with a wire and all it could do was pause. It was a top loader and I still love those to this day.

Yes, and many of the movies you mention are among my favorites. I think it's not so much the movie, but the time when you see the movie that makes it have such an impact. I'm sure any Kubrick film or Hitch classic would've blown my mind at 12.

For me it was a combination of films starting with 'Star Wars' in 1977 and then followed by 'Apocalypse Now'. During that time I would ALWAYS watch Siskel & Ebert At the Movies and read Ebert's movie guides, which then got me off of my Action/Sc-Fi only films kick to the following movies- 'Citizen Kane' and 'A Matter of Life and Death'.

But it ALL started with 'Star Wars' in 1977.

- edit-

Also, I should throw in 'Blade Runner' too. Those two monologues on the roof at the end, blew me away the first time that I watched it in the theater.

I still need to see Blade Runner. After all the people on this site say I'm surprised I haven't yet.

Within about a six month spread in 1977, I saw STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. If that wouldn't do it, nothing would.

None, actually.

I became enamored of movies after watching the 1998 Oscars and going to a movie score concert.

2001 and PATTON at age 7-1/2 and 10. A double feature of TRUE GRIT and FANTASTIC VOYAGE (really!) at Century 25 in Campbell, CA around 1969 or so.

CITIZEN KANE and STRANGELOVE and DARK STAR when I was 15 or so.

Back to the Future is one of my faves, so that's definitely a contender for the top spot. The pre-Disney Star Wars is another one, too.

It was actually a critic from the Miami Herald named Rene Rodriguez, who got me interested in independent and foreign movies. One Friday my History teacher, either in the 9th or 10th grade, brought to my attention Rene's 4-star review of Alexander Payne's ELECTION. He said that I should see this movie because this critic rarely gives out 4-stars. And I did, and I enjoyed it. Then I discovered that the Sundance or IFC channel was playing Payne's feature debut, CITIZEN RUTH, which I also enjoyed, and watched many times. Discovering these two channels, as well as the Miami Herald critic, introduced me to many interesting independent and foreign movies.

Wes Craven's SCREAM turned me into a Horror fan as a 7th or 8th grader. Then John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS nearly scared me away from them soon after.
