I noticed that the Maltese Falcon is being released in October. However I noticed that the 1931 version of the film is not going to be included as a supplement as it was included in the last dvd release.
Why not include the 1931 version with it? Although maybe not quite a classic, it is a very interesting film and in a few ways its actually better than the Bogart version. maltese.jpg Maltese Falcon Blu-ray Review Last edited by Scottie; 03-23-2017 at 02:19 PM. |

Thats a good enough reason to wait and not buy this edition. Its shameful how they get people to double dip.
They've already released two blu-ray versions of Predator and they'll probably release another judging by the reviews. |

Predator is a 20th Century Fox title; this is a Warner Brothers film, but your argument is correct. Even if an SD master limited them from presenting the 1931 version in HD, WB has had no problem loading their BDs up with 480p (NTSC DVD-quality) extras, so the omission of previous extras is irritating.

As of now I refuse to buy any Blu-ray to replace a DVD that's a "lesser" edition than the DVD.

I actually don't mind that Satan met a Lady is MIA. As a Bogie fan I have minimal interest, and as Maltese Falcon fan I have no great interest.
Besides it would have only been in SD anyway. If I really want Satan met a Lady, I will buy it in a proper high def release down the road. It reminds me of how they included the earlier version of Gigi in SD on the Gigi BD. I could do without it. Now if they had dropped any of the other features I would have been annoyed. |

Just got Maltese Falcon from Amazon. It looks great. Detail in the darks, great contrast, sharp and clear sound. Too bad the supplements are standard definition. They could have at least bumped the cartoons up with a retransfer. Can't wait to see Treasure tomorrow.

Just watched mine tonight too and it's excellent. It's not quite Casablanca but it's awfully close. I saw a lot of detail I'd never noticed before and the blacks were very solid. In fact, I'd say it compares very favorably to Criterion's The Third Man.
I had to tweak my audio delay but it didn't appear to be an issue with the transfer. Over the years I've played the dvd on a variety of players and always had to play with the audio delay a little. It's not a problem with the audio itself, it's more that the staccato, rhythmic dialogue style coupled with the full-face headshots make out-of-sync audio *really* obvious. (I'm also wondering if mono soundtracks take less processing and thus tend to get just a bit more ahead of the video than other soundtracks might. I've had to tweak delay on other blus but I had to nudge this one by a good half second). |
