Default A Curious question.

I since I first built my first HT with 6 Sony B1000 Bookshelfs a Yamaha Center with Onkyo receiver to my current setup with my ES and large soundstage speakers have always had the issue of not knowing how high to place my rears. The sounds behind you in my home theater always seem to be just on the edge of noticible versus being truly enveloping. I believe the issue resides in how high the speakers are sitting. Right now I have my rear tweeters placed at ear level which is partially blocked by the height of the couch back. Roughly 3 feet or so from the corners of the couchs location. Do you think it would be prudent to raise the speakers a foot or so to get the tweeters above the listeners ear to make the sounds more prevalent.

For movie applications, surround speakers should be installed higher than your head when you are sitting down. Install them somewhere between your head and the ceiling.

You may want to consult the dolby site for their suggestions. The DTS and THX sites may have similar recommendations.

hopefully i can clarify some detail as well, as much as we have our surrounds present to broaden the surround environment, we dont want them to draw too much attention. with this in mind, i think that your current speaker levels (assuming they've been calibrated), should suffice and be more enjoyable than having them louder than your current increments. with regards to the height, id also concur, and try to see if it would be a vast improvement for you.

- keep volume levels the same for the surround channels
- get something temporary and use them to raise the height of the surrounds. if the stands can handle a couple of books, even em out and work from there.

I won't truly know until I get my new receiver but stepping back to my Denon AVR 1707 and setting the rear soundstage about 9" higher really made a fairly large difference in discernible surround effects. Thanks for the info guys.
