Default Buy a Sequel without owning Original?

So I was wondering, I was a little cash strapped this summer and couldn't finally buy "Iron Man" or the original "Toy Story" films as I'd planned. I netflixed the Blu-rays instead. Now that I've seen them recently, I don't feel like I need to see them again. "Iron Man 2" and "Toy Story 3" however, I may buy this fall.

Ever done anything similar? You own a sequel but somehow not the original?

Nope, it's either all or nothing for me. I did buy Crank after renting it, but sold it after renting Crank 2 since it was terrible when compared to the first one.

Yea, I got Child's Play 4 an 5 because they were more humorous and didn't take themselves seriously. The first 3 Child's Play films seemed to try to be serious.

I am usually a completist but there are exceptions, such as I own 28 Weeks Later but not 28 Days Later.

If you've got a high-def sound system, you're missing out. The 5.1 DTS HD-MA track on the 28 Days Later blu-ray isn't perfect, but it sounds SO much better than the DVD.

I try to collect a series, but if one or more individual movies just suck (to me), then I'll happily skip it. They don't all have to be perfect, or "better than the last one" type deal, but I need to enjoy watching it, otherwise, what's the point? There are also long time running series that you may choose to collect based on the time period, or cast/director/etc., or just individual favorites, for example: James Bond, Star Trek, etc. My advice is this: keep it simple - buy what you like and skip what you don't. The only exception I can think of is if you are collecting a series for financial or historical value, then it doesn't matter what you like, you should get them all, but if it's just your own private collection, then you really only want what you like to watch (or the wife and kids), otherwise, it's just a waste of money IMO (unless it bugs you that much, then grab whatever you're missing someday, when it arrives at some $5 and under bargain bin).

I own a Transporter 3 and Resident Evil; Extinction without the earlier flicks.

I think if a movie can stand on it's so be it.

I will likely get the other Resident Evil's though, it rocks.

I bought the 2nd season of True Blood on blu without having the first. It was a good buy at $40 and I hadn't seen it yet (and didn't want to wait a whole month to get it on Netflix). Since I've already seen Season 1, I probably won't get it any time soon because it's always so expensive. If it goes on sale, I might bite (haha).

I have both Daniel Craig Bond movies on blu, and have no intention of getting the other Bonds, since I have them on DVD (which are good enough) and in no way can afford to upgrade 20 movies....

Although I'm pretty anal about my blus (they are all alphabetized), I wouldn't mind having a sequel without an original....

I have Spider-Man 3- the first blu I ever bought but no Spider-Man 1 & 2 I want them but only if I can get them both for under $30.00 since neither one of them have special features. I dont want to buy the boxed set since I don't want two copies of a sub par movie!

When I was collecting DVD's, I would buy everything in the series, regardless of whether I liked the sequels or not. I liked the look of the entire series standing shoulder-to-shoulder on the shelf. Completeness was the key.

But with blus, I'm much pickier. I'm looking for transfer quality first, then sequel consideration later. Also, even though it's a sequel, if I didn't like the movie, it's not automatically up for buying like in my DVD days. For instance, I have T2, but not Terminator, since I'm holding out for a better Terminator transfer. Also, I have Predator but not Predator 2, since I enjoy Predator much more than Predator 2.

Yeah, it's all or nothing for me. Heck, I own all four Terminator's even though I'd only classify the second one as a favorite. When I buy an entry in a series I have to own them all. It's a sickness most likely.

That's a good way of looking at it: a sickness.

Most of the time, it's the other way around. I own the original and not some of the follow ups.

Examples are Nightwatch (owned) - skipped Daywatch

Xmen, X2 Owned - skipped X3, Wolverine

As for 28 days later, I own the DVD and will probably never buy the bluray. Own 28 weeks later on blu.

And to the OP - Ironman was a better movie in terms of story and pacing than Ironman 2.

Hey, I bought the new Star Trek movie without owning any other movie in the series, and what did I do? I bought the other 10 previous movies without having ever seen any of them.

Turns out some of them were actually better than the new one, so not always a negative sickness.

Reminds me, the best example I have is:

Wrath of Khan - owned. Don't own Star Trek TMP.

Quite true. Wrath of Kahn and First Contact were better.

I'd say Star Trek doesn't count, since the movie was a reboot rather than a sequel. I own plenty of remakes where I don't have the original.
