Default What exactly is the point of a blu ray burner?!@!

What is the point? To burn copies of other blu ray bought movies? Can you even do this? Or to burn .mkv files that are like 10gb to a blu ray disc and play it on a blu ray player??? I dont really get the point

To burn content on, of course.

Just the same as burning DVDs, just more space to work with.

You say to burn content on. Like data and music and videos? But the blu ray disc you burn all this data on will only work on a blu ray player or blu ray drive in a computer so its kind of lame.

I would not mind having one to burn data as a backup. Double layer DVD only have 8.5gb, image using one disc to stor close to 50gb, I would love that.

I wouldn't exactly call it lame. While there are so many different mass storage device options nowadays, being able to record BDs still has its purposes. And BD-ROMs are getting quite cheap.

Yeah, I find it kinda lame that I went on vacation and all my pictures were on a sd card. If I didn't have a sd card slot or another way to connect my camera to my computer I couldn't transfer the images and video. It's also kinda lame I need a monitor or tv to connect to my media device. It's also kinda lame my old crt tv wasn't HD. Hell that was so lame I had to buy a new tv and surround system just to make it sound good. Was also lame I had to get a blu-ray player to play BD, why couldn't my dvd player just play them. Oh yeah sound systems are kinda lame also.

Say you own a HD video cam and go on a vacation. You assemble some of the best footage and spend time editing it, making cool transitions, voiceovers and fades. You end up with a huge file that would be too large to email. Why not burn it to BD and share with your friends/family?

Duh, to backup your Netflix rentals. What else?!

lol, actually, I have a digital camera that will also record 16:9 720P AVCHD Lite video as well, I can burn those files directly to a Blu-ray without any conversion at all, and my Oppo 93 plays the discs perfectly - MUCH nicer to watch home videos on my 120" theater room screen than on my wimpy little 26" computer screen...

Everyone will have their own personal reasons. Personally, I would see it as a great way to archive my already big collection of music and non-commercial (i.e. Star Wars fanfilms, fanfilms based on videogame franchises, etc.) movies. At this point, the cost of a Blu-ray burner and blanks is not cost-effective for me so until those drop down in price-I'll stick to my external HDD's and DVD-R's for now.

If you're looking for a point, I'd say its to gauge how many early adopters will jump onto it. The same thing happened with CDRW drives, and eventually DVDRW drives. They started out expensive and problem-prone and as technology got better (and cheaper) everyone eventually added one to their computer setup. Sadly, the adoption rate for BD-writers is not very impressive at this point compared to CDRW and DVDRW.

I put each one of the Bears games on a BR. I usually can get the FOX/CBS/NBC pregame and the game itself onto one disc. Of course I capture via QAM so the TS files are identical to what I see live. If you have a HD PVR you can also record movies off satellite and burn those to disc.

I'm going to start getting into the backup game. I have hundreds of DVD backups. Prices have fallen enough and my space is valuable enough that BR is the best solution.

I can relate to the HDD issues. When my last laptop bit the dust I lost my MP3 collection that went from computer to computer since the 90s, digital copies, and my running info log (last backup: 13 month prior.) Thankfully I had/have all of my digital photos backed up to multiple HDDs. I have 5 externals (5.7tb total) that are almost full (I download/capture a ton of sports stuff.)

Yeah, as for backup purposes I run 2 1TB HDD's
that 2 or 3 times a week I clone, that way no matter what happens to my current HDD I still have a bootable cloned drive, that is at most 2 days out of date.

Can you give any particulars about them? Media brand, burning program, burn speed, etc?
