Default I pre-ordered HD DVD

Well people I did it. I pre-ordered the toshiba HD DVD at Bestbuy.com today. My reasons for getting this player instead of the Blue-ray is that it makes more sence to get a High Def Player for 500.$ as apposed to 1000.$, my intentions are to get a PS3 anyway so why not just wait until that comes out in November(hopefully) for half the price. It just makes sence to do it this way. I wont be spending much on purchasing HD DVD's because I am told that Netflix and Blockbuster will both cary HD DVD's and renting them will be a better way to go until we find out what happins in the long term. Lets be honest here, this DVD war is going to go on for a while I dont see any short term winners here. I was told buy bestbuy that it could be here as early as the 14th but I will keep my fingers crossed that it comes out this month.

Perhaps you should change your name to Sellout1.

No just kidding, I hope you are happy with your purchase although I am surprised since you use the name of the biggest BD supporter's company as your handle.

I don't see much wrong in spending $500 on a HD-DVD player. IMO it's very cheap for a first generation player so even if it fails it hasn't cost much to see what the format can do. I'd be sorely tempted to do the same if it were to be released in the Uk at an equivelent price of £300. My first dvd playe was a budget Toshiba in 2001 and that cost £220 but retailed for at least £300. This many years after the formats release and when you factor in 5 years of inflation etc...

Don't get me wrong I am still supporting Blue-ray, although I must admit I want my High Def and I want it now! I just bought a 55in 3LCD Sony Wega last October so I am looking forward to seeing what it can do with HD DVD. What I really want is a Blue-Ray Recorder however I think that will take some time for the price to come down on that. 500$ is not allot to ask for HD over the summer, I hope it lives up to my expectations.

Default Pre Order HD DVD

HD DVD came out in Japan on March 31 bundled with 2 movies, one of the movies being Resident Evil 1,as Toshiba owns the rights to that movie in Japan. If you cant wait, import it. I wonder if HD DVD discs would play on US players? If they can I would love to get Resident Evil 1 on HD.Well I'm sure Resident Evil 1 will be out here in the states sometime in the future by Sony for Blu-Ra.

I can see much wrong in spending $500 on a HD DVD player. Mainly, because if more and more people share this type of opinion, the longer HD DVD will take to die, again causing more confusion to the public. This is precisely why Toshiba went to such drastic measures in trying to push their format. The quicker we can have only one format (Blu-ray), the better in my opinion.

Heretic! :-p

I plan on waiting for the new Spiderman 3 movie to be released in 2007. By then, a clear winner should be obvious and allow me to buy a player that will play Spiderman 3 in hi-def.

Machines will be a little better, and cheaper by then, I hope.
Yeah baby, yeah!

I don't see a winner until about 2010...

people will be alot slower to convert from DVD to HD DVD because the transition isn't as drastic and people will be more likely to wait this out until the price is much more convenient...

aside from PS3 purchases, I think the HD format will be a slow burn in the DVD realm..

I give HD DVD a year, tops. By early spring next year they'll realize they can no longer compete with Blu-ray because of PS3 becoming a big success late this year.

There are still lots of people who still only have VHS. They won't go to DVD because of the cost to convert. Some of the more sane ones got a vhs/dvd player combo.

You have to realize, the market is filled with all kinds of demographics. Some are drooling early adopters, many (like me) have a "wait and see" approach, and still others are too damn poor or cheap to move on.

VHS is about 30 years old now, and movies are still released on tape. Heck, the last vinyl album was made in 1990. Tape and CD took over. Now, even CD is threatened because of Ipod's and MP3 players.

Indeed, DVD will live for decades, but I don't plan on waiting too long to get a hi-def player. Some movies I will definately re-purchase in HD, others no. Probably because they won't be available.

As consumers we need to be wary of Hi-Def movies being made that are little more than the DVD version stuck on a new disc. Doesn't mean it will truly be in Hi-Def.

Actually, there are limited edition, very high fidelity vinyl albums still being made and sold. Rare and not easy to find, but they exist.

I hope this transition does not happen with the lower bit rates currently the norm. The songs sold on iTunes and such are poorer quality than that average CD which were poorer quality than the previously mentioned very high fidelity vinyl albums. The degradation in quality has to stop somewhere.

Amen! I can't bear to listen to mp3s because they are of such poor quality. Maybe I'm in the minority but I will continue to buy CDs for as long as they make them, which I hope will be a very long time.
