so you're a blu exclusive studio huh? in it for the long haul? really want this platform to take off and for people to have a reason to adopt it? well....
as much as it hurts (now), why don't you withhold your SD DVD release and ONLY release all NEW films on Blu? get people out of the DVD market. take the option away. |

Even when DVD's came out, VHS didn't disappear with what seemed to me like forever, and in some cases, still hasn't to this day. Sadly, some people just do not care about quality. I fear it will be a long time away before a studio comits to that... ![]() |

Might be hard to convince somebody to go from their shiny new $30 DVD player to a $500 super future movie machine. DVD will not go away anytime soon, there is way to much money in it. I see it happening more like "Teazle" said it (which is what happened with vhs/dvd), and it will work much better for everybody... "they might very plausibly do timed exclusives" Just promote/mention blu-ray to anybody you can, you may help get another supporter sooner than you think, and they will remember blu-ray over hd-dvd when it comes buying time; and this helps us all by lowering costs! |

On reflection I can think of one potential problem with this -- the way advertising is bought to promote new releases. No way you could buy separate TV spots first for the early BD and then the later DVD release. Or maybe you could if they were only staggered by a week or two. "Coming soon to BD and DVD" could mean a short period rather than one day.
On the other hand maybe it wouldn't really matter if the early BD release didn't get the ad support until the DVD came along later (at which time it's announced "Buy now on BD or DVD" just as at present). |

When they can make the same $150m that bribed Paramount with a single DVD release, I don't think any Studio will take up that challenge.

That's a totally anti-consumer idea that would be a worse move than what Paramount did. Besides, I don't think HD media sales even comes close to their DVD sales right now.
Earlier releases would be more viable. |

But it wouldn't bother me; other than not being able to view Universal and now Paramount films--i refuse to invest in an inferior product so i just rent their dvds. |

Bad move, you would piss so many people off that people would be turned off by HD as they would despise that it was forced upon them. It would be idiotic for any studio to even consider this, which they obviously are not.
