Yes, but not by much, it is because the technology in Blu Ray is simply more advanced then that of HD-DVD, hence the components are a bit more expensive, but again, not by much. I would say the price difference between a good HD-DVD player and a good Blu Ray player with ALL THE SAME capabilities would be no more then $25.00 - $50.00 per unit. Remembering of course that they both don't have the same capability because the Blu Ray player has more expandibility and growth potential. Whatever else, size does matter.

I sure hope the BDA announces something this week to retaliate against this.

Blu-ray players have more competition cause they have so many companies building them, and only Toshiba and Venture are making HD-DVD (both low-quality producers).
So why haven't the BD players dropped to the same price yet?

I afraid it's all about to hit the fan!

I kinda doubht $199 being low enough for an off brand player. This will not change anything.

now that i read the article it says wal-mart could be selling them for 150. im just saying, who buys 150 dollar pieces of off brand equipment from wally world???? i mean seriously a venteruer hd dvd player to go with your ilo hdtv??? its going to make blu-ray look like something really superior, especially if they got a sony tv and a bdp-s300 going right next to it.

like I said the people buying electronics from wal-mart probably don't even have a damn HDTV.......and most tech savy people wouldn't even touch this thing with their damn hands.

heres what i want to know. wal-mart is not going to sell these at a loss. so lets say bare min. they make 20 bucks a player off them. that means venteruer is selling these for $130 a piece to wal-mart. how do they expect to turn anytype of profit??? i mean startup costs had to be millions and basically they are going to need to sell hundreds of thousands of these things just to break even.

So what do you think people buy at wally world? $400 Sony blu-ray players?

I think for any format to sell anything successfully at wal-mart, it needs to be under $200. While I wouldn't buy this player, I think it has a chance.

Seriously - How many people here would look to walmart of a good TV either?

I remember buying not one but three DVD players from Wal-Mart when the price was $120. I don't remember the brand, but I didn't care. I bought the players for me and my parents and that was the begining of my DVD collection.

It will probably street at $159. When you say off brand think Oppo Apex and a few others...they do sell well. I think the BDA needs something to combat these new low priced players and it should of been done yesterday. They knew they were coming for over 8 months. Paramount and Dreamworks also knew they were coming. BDA needs to quit sitting on their ass's and make a move. Cedia is coming soon they better be there with some good info or....

so who is going to buy that when the A2 is at 199? Yeah, i doubt we will be seeing a lot of cheap chinese players hitting the market as there is absolutely no profit for these things or reason to buy them. $199 is too steep for an off brand one, not going to sell hd dvd.

Exactly! It makes no since to sell an off brand player for the same price you can get a name brand and possibly better player. I think the HD DVD promotional group has officially soldified themselves as the dumbest organization in America.

We don't really know if the Toshiba player will be $199 though. It could end up being available for that, but it sounds like this player might be available for $150. $50 is still $50.

I understand what you are saying but these players are for your Wal-Mart shopper. Even at $150 they will sit there because your average Wal-Mart shopper will more than likely think this is an expensive DVD player and decide to get that 30 dollar DVD player sitting next to it.

Yeah, that is very likely. I guess the big unknown is whether or not wal-mart will be selling them and if they do, how they market them. Marketed correctly, they could do ok.

Reading the entire release, since this will be a wally world special, $150 seemed to be a real possibility, the MSRP is $199, but what they are saying here is $150. In my view, I would not buy a piece of equipment that was built to display High Quality product on a low priced cheap player. I would probably be more concerned about if the player would ruin my disks!
