Falls can be pretty nasty for the horses, doesn't take much to break a leg, and its kind of unnessicary these days, when they could easily substitute a real horse for a fake one (close up cut, fall, back to real horse).

Nothing was shot in 3D. Two scenes were converted in post, adding some dodgy diorama-like backdrops and CG-knives-flying-at-the-screen-type stuff. It wasn't very well done and at one point it cut back and forth between 2D and 3D shots, so I had to keep removing the glasses and then put them back on. It was annoying as hell.

Yuen Woo-Ping picked the two most important action scenes to be in 3D. Nevertheless, it took more than 10 months to create the fight scenes in 3D. The process required more than 100 digital artists in post-production who worked layer by layer and frame by frame. In order to shoot the actual action scenes in 3D, two cameras had to be set up and the choreography was less ornate and adapted for maximum 3D visual impact.

As for producers unwilling to make the financial leap into 3D, Hong Kong CGI post house Menfond Electronic Art (萬寬電腦藝術設計有限公司) touted its 2D to 3D conversion technology, a process used to convert some 20 minutes of the Yuen Woo-ping (袁和平) directed martial arts drama True Legend (蘇乞兒). According to Menfond, the process, which requires painstaking rotoscoping of each individual film frame, is the same one used to convert Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas for its 3D theatrical re-release in 2006.

The 3D tech used in Avatar and such is not a two-camera process, it uses a single stereoscopic camera. Two cameras are used as a cheaper substitute since it gives you an extra angle to work from during the conversion. (Note that I never said the movie wasn't made with 3D in mind -- the fight choreography was clearly envisioned for 3D -- but they didn't use a 3D camera.)

And sounds like by the results, it wasn't any good. Wonder if this Blu-ray will give the option to turn the 3D off?

Damn i want this in 2D and uncut

Watched the 3D version of this movie recently. First, the action in this movie is way better than I remember it being. The fight choreography is stunning and hard hitting, and is more inventive in any 30 second span than you might find in the entirety of another movie. Can't believe YWP can still make vital stuff like this after working for 30+ years. That said, the 3D is lousy. It's only used in a few scenes and there is a heavy cardboard cutout feeling to it. Plus, it's sloppy. For example, a person's body will be popped out in the foreground, but the piece of floor he is standing on (ie, it should be at same depth) is way in the background. So, he looks like he's floating above the image.

What's a real shame is that the entire movie is shot like it was made for 3D. If they had shot it in 3D (or taken real care in doing the conversion), this could've been an all-time great 3D experience. As it stands, the 3d version is not even worth downloading.
