What is the difference between Imax3d, Real3D, Disney3D, Blu Ray 3D?

Hi,

I went to see some movies in Imax3D (Avatar and Toy Story 3D) and more recently went to one in Real3D (Resident Evil Afterlife ) and I liked the Real3D technology a whole hellofah lot better.

I noticed during a trailer before the movie Disney claims to have Disney3D but I don't know if that's also another format.

So,.. Here's my question... Is the Blu Ray 3D the same tech as "Real3D" that's used in theaters now?

Also,.. I know different vendors are trying to get exclusives and whatnot but all that aside is the 3D tech on the new Blu Rays all the same?

From what i understand is that all movies are passive 3d which does not reqire the active shutter glasses that blu-ray has for home. the active shutter alternated the picture to your eyes and the passive at theaters alternation is done by a combination of the screen and projetor.

I'll try to learn more but it seems the Blu tech isn't either of the technologies you get in commertial theaters currently.

Disney just likes to rename there products of any format to take credit for every technology.

yes disney always does that. but the tech used for blu-ray 3d i definately not in theaters cause it is encoded on the disc.

the disks are all the same (at least as far as 3D is concerned) the BD standard/spec uses AVC's feature of multiview to encode two versions (left and right) of the movie. then the players decode it and create two streams. What is done with those two streams will then depend on the player and display.

there are actually three realD techs (on the projector side) but they all use the same polarized glasses. On the BD side the format is only for the disk, what happens after depends on the player and the display (the same way you can watch your 1080p BD as 720p or 1080p or even 1080i, on an LCD, Plasma rear projection TV or projector). So in that respect you can’t compare realD to BD. But most (if not all) the 3DTVs use shutter glasses and not passive polarized glasses. For Projectors I am not sure, I heard some use polarized while others shutters.
