Still haven't seen City of Hope yet, though have heard some good things about the film over the years. Hard to believe it never made it's way to even regular DVD....Would definitely like to see this on Blu....

There's no deal. His films were indies and most didn't make huge money. Matewan is out on Criterion but with horribly skewed green color timing. Baby It's You is also out. Pretty much every other film he's made is not on blu, so it's not just a "number," it's pretty much everything. I expect Lone Star to come from Warner Archive. I have a digital HD copy but it's not a remaster or anything.

It's sad that it's almost 30 years since Sayles' COH was released, and we still don't even have this on regular DVD. I'm a huge Sayles fan & have been wanting to see the film for years. However, I can't even find a decent copy to stream.
So, hopefully this does make it's way to Blu/DVD sooner rather than later. I feel that The Criterion Collection would be the perfect label to release this. But, if not, maybe Shout! or a smaller boutique label. |

Finally saw Sayles' City of Hope in it's entirety. Great film, and one of Sayles' best movies.
The intertwining of various characters & story-lines was seamlessly & organically done. The politics, crime, relationships, etc. in this film were compelling & effective. Excellent ensemble cast as well, including Sayles regulars like David Strathairn, Maggie Renzi, Sayles himself, etc. - as well as other great actors/actresses including Angela Bassett, Vincent Spano, Gina Gershon, Joe Morton, Frankie Faison, etc. Too bad the film still isn't on DVD/Blu. It definitely needs to reach a wider audience. Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 12-18-2020 at 02:32 AM. |
