Default Tis the Season for Scary Movies.

Being the month of Halloween, October is naturally a month to see and collect scary movies of all sorts.

I thought it would be interesting to see what chilly, weird, frightening, creepy, edge-of-your-seat, shocking films people have recently added to their BD collections within the last month -- or will soon be adding within the next month or so. They don't have to feature ghosts, zombies or the supernatural, or be considered as part of the horror genre, but they should be memorably strange or creepy in some way.

A few of my newly-acquired (or soon to be acquired) scary flicks on Blu-ray include

The Omen Collection (finally acquiring; nice to upgrade my SD-DVD of the 1976 movie)
King Kong (1933; has moments that still feel unsettling to this day)
The Exorcist (but, of course)
Se7en (a very chilling crime drama)
The Killer Inside Me (2010; another very disturbing crime flick)
Psycho (on preorder; should be a nice upgrade)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (on preorder)
Videodrome (a blind buy of early Cronenberg on preorder, though not due until December)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951; to order soon)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978; to order soon)
Jacob's Ladder (to order soon)

28 Days Later (maybe)
28 Weeks Later (another maybe)

A couple months ago, I added the Red Riding trilogy (a series of memorable, unsettling crime dramas). Earlier in the year came: Shutter Island (which is chilling in its own way); Fear(s) of the Dark (on SD-DVD but the 2009 film deserves mention; it's an anthology of dark, animated tales); Poltergeist (how can one forget that classic?); The Man Who Fell to Earth (weird sci-fi that reminds me a little of The Day the Earth Stood Still); and District 9.

I may also buy I Am Legend, but only if the price on the UCE drops. If so, it would be interesting to also buy The Omega Man (which I still haven't seen) and the still-on-SD-DVD The Last Man on Earth, as all three are based on the same classic story.

Also a contender is the 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers on SD-DVD, just to compare the older classic to the 1970s one, which should be interesting. (I'll forget about the latest incarnation of the story, The Invasion, of just a few years ago, for now.)

What are your choices this year?

Trick R Treat
2001 Maniacs
Freddy vs Jason
Dead Snow
Frozen
Children of the Corn
Hatchet
Child's Play
Evil Dead

A few more, can't think of them off the top of my head. I'll be getting a few(dozen) more if BB, WM and Amazon keeps these low prices going.

It might as well ALWAYS be Halloween when it comes to my movie collection. Some of my favorites appropriate for the season are:

The Amityville Horror (1979)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Dark Water (2005)
Silent Hill (2006)
Paranormal Activity (2007)
The Eye (2008)
One Missed Call (2008)

Same goes for me it might always be Halloween with my collection. I would like to add Let the Right One in to the list as well as 30 Days of night, and even gasp the Nightmare on Elm street remake

Ok, for my BDay, I returned a Nook gift and took the cash next door to Best Buy. Hey, they gave me receipt and told me to do what I wanted.
Here's what I got to bolster my horror stuff;

Zombie Strippers
Saw 2
Saw 3
Saw 4
Saw 5
Saw 6
Diary of the Dead
Hatchet
Suck (Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper)
Death Proof

Also grabbed;
Enemy of the State
A Prophet
Office Space w/ Flair!
Pathfinder
12 Monkeys

All titles I would not normally purchase on my own steam ('cept the bolded ones) but...for free, Halloween is afoot, and I couldn't resist these guilty pleasures.

A Prophet (excellent film) and, maybe, Enemy of the State I would like to add to my own collection some day. 12 Monkeys I have and enjoy.

Well, that goes to show just how popular these kinds of movies are with both the format and the viewers. A lot of remarkable titles here.

This one is a little different since he's asking what you recently added or are adding to your collection for Halloween.

I will be picking up tomorrow:

The Exorcist (Digibook)
Seven (Digibook)
all 3 Final Destination movies (they're 9.99 at future shop right now)

and coming October 22nd I'm getting A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET STEELBOOK (GERMAN)

yes that's right. Steelbook of the movie so many people on here hate lol but I liked it.

No mention of The Shining? A great film and a great Blu-ray as well.

Though I read the book many years ago I still haven't seen this film. I'll probably blind-buy it at some point. It looks as if it may be interesting. The book gave me chills, especially since, at the time that I read it, I was just a little kid who (as I do now) liked dogs, including St Bernards.

I have The Shining, but that's more of a winter movie. Same reason I didn't list Black Christmas (1974).

The Shining can be a winter movie, I do see your rationale. But I definitely think it can work for Halloween, too. That film has always unnerved me since childhood.

I saw a portion of the original (1974) Black Christmas on cable a couple years ago and it looked quite suspenseful. I'm sure I'll pick up the BD at some point; thanks for reminding me.

Ooh, The Exorcist and Seven both provide excellent scares and do a wonderful job of putting viewers on edge for most of their running times and they're both terrific films in all aspects. Good choices.

I still haven't seen the Final Destination movies, aside from brief excerpts that looked intriguing.
