Not to stop the "funniest movie..." comments rolling, but I honestly thought this was painfully unfunny. I love both actors, but this was probably their worst work yet.

it just makes me laugh how AGAIN the trade ad uses the "funniest comedy since the hangover" line!
like EVERY comedy since the hangover used this line
yes the hangover was funny, but they are acting as if it were the bible
of comedy films. then again, compared to some of those films using that advertising slogan, the hangover actually is the bible in comparison!

Well, I'd agree with that as far as Rudd goes. The disappointment for me is that Rudd was given the role Ben Stiller has to take for his paycheck movies - the straight man to everyone else. Anyone could've done it. Rudd is currently my favorite comedic actor and it was a shame to see him so wasted. I didn't think it was AWFUL or anything and I'll still probably pick it up when it starts seeing massive price drops.

This movie was hilarious! One of the funniest movies I've seen at the theatre for a long time. I thought it also had alot of heart.

The movie looks alot stupider than it is - it's a pretty well-balanced movie between serious and funny (more funny though).

I found the first 20mins to be very dull and boring. I almost gave up on the movie at that point however the 2nd/3rd acts were (IMO) very good and made up for the dull first 20mins.

rented this the other day and i have to say..it was just plain awful. And this is coming from a huge paul rudd fan. I loved role models, loved him in knocked up and 40 year old virgin. I usually like most comedies but this one wasn't even remotely amusing. Do yourself a favor and skip this or at the very least rent it. You'll be glad you did

Just watched this.

My user review: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dinne...8/#UserReviews

OR

Since Anchorman and The Forty Year Old Virgin, Hollywood have capitalized on the popularity of the bromantic comedy genre by churning out several films each year. Fans will have fond memories of Knocked Up, I Love You, Man or The Hangover while cursing the day they sat through The Other Guys or Grown Ups. Dinner for Schmucks lies somewhere in between the two extremes.

Dinner for Schmucks tells the story of Tim (Rudd) who at the request of his boss, has to find an idiot to invite for dinner to be ridiculed by guests at the dinner, in order to boost his chances for a promotion. His girlfriend, Julie (Stephanie Szostak) finds the idea repulsive and asks him not to do follow through with the idea. Tim agrees but what do you do when an idiot falls down from the skies and onto your lap? Tim knocks Barry (Carrell) over and instantly notices that this is the idiot that he needs and invites Barry over for dinner. Barry, oblivious of Tim's motives agrees to the dinner and throughout the film, Tim and Barry goes through a series of events, each more preposterous than the last, as both people learn on what they want in their lives, about friendship and love.

The main problem I have with the film is the sense of overwhelming familiarity I feel as I watch this film and I am not talking about the premise although I am told that this film is a remake of a very successful French film. For instance, Paul Rudd seems to be playing the same character he played in I Love You, Man while Therman (Zach Galifianakis) seems to be playing the same character he played in The Hangover. Steve Carrell seems to be playing the same character he played in Get Smart although there is one scene where Barry is asked to 'punish' a very naughty girl that screams Forty Year Old Virgin. And there is this character Kieran, he feels similar to Russell Brand's character in Get Him to The Greek. This film feels like a mix and match integrating successful elements of previous bromantic comedies but someone should have told Jay Roach that while you may have the same ingredients, the results may differ and in the case for Dinner for Schmucks, it has produced average results. Another fatal blow the film makes is to have the audience laugh at Barry's idiocy. The viewers are constantly reminded by Tim and Julie on how cruel is it to laugh at others' misfortune but then ironically proceeds by asking the audience to laugh at Barry's behavior.

While the film cannot boast of reference level video and audio quality, the film looks and sounds great given the limitations on how little the source material would stretch the capabilities of the Blu-ray format. There are a limited number of extras in this release boasting only of two 'making of' featurette, a gag reel, deleted scenes and a Paul Rudd-Steve Carrell skit mocking LeBron James' "The Decision."

At heart, Dinner for Schmucks has a noble message; that the joke is on the one that laughs at others. Having said that, I am not sure anyone would want to be in Barry's shoes, even for a day. In spite of my many criticisms of the film, I do believe that there is some entertainment value in this film for a lazy Saturday afternoon. While it is neither original or laugh-out-loud funny, I do believe that Dinner for Schmucks would be a worthy recommendation for viewers

So I just gave this one another spin last night. Watching so much horror lately, that I felt like a needed a comedy in my life.

I watched this when it came out, and remember thinking it was ok, but not that funny. However, upon revisiting it last night, I laughed really hard almost all the way through, and thought Zack Galf stole every scene he was in. It really is a funny movie, but it does have a couple of fatal flaws. Mostly narrative flaws, though.

The "message" of the movie is that it's not good to laugh at idiots who aren't aware of how silly they are, while asking the audience to do just that very thing! Also, Steve's character isn't a lovable idiot at all.

We're supposed to care about him, as he isn't being intentionally malevolent, but all of his actions towards Paul Rudd's character are utterly life destroying. Even after Paul asks him to stop being such a destructive force, he continues to wreck Paul's life. Being that he has to actively do these destructive things, I had no sympathy for him, and would have been way meaner to him than Paul Rudd was, mean enough to make him want to leave me alone.

The failure of this film, is that Jay Roach wanted it both ways. He wanted to tell us it's bad to laugh at these people, while asking us to laugh at these people. He wanted us to feel bad for Steve's character, while he is being a terrible person.

Having said that, I will reiterate that I laughed my socks off, so how do you rate a film like that? I don't know, and I'm at a loss on this one.
