I watched this last night - and really enjoyed it. Strong Blu-ray transfer with eye-popping colours throughout. I can see how this is somewhat a "marmite" film in that it polarizes opinion. The bright, strong colours and music numbers juxtaposed against a story of domestic violence and murders makes for an interesting contrast. The lead actress was captivating, and I liked the visual style of the movie - sort of a Jean-Pierre Jeunet style filmed in Nintendo-vision!

Wow, what a movie!!! It's one of the best films I've seen this year. In terms of eye popping colors and mix of animation and musical numbers, it can't be any further from Confessions. Among Tetsuya Nakashima's films I've seen, it's my favorite by far and I loved them all. Highly recommended.

Apologies for bumping this old thread but the Tetsuya Nakashima is one of my favourites and i love this film so much.
One thing i only recently realised is that the actor who plays Tetsuya Yamekawa (the writer who Matsuko dates before he commits suicide) Kudo Kankuro is actually a professional writer as well as an actor in real life. In fact he wrote the Japanese morning drama Amachan which was around 40 hours long and is for me easily the best of the four Japanese morning dramas i have seen so far. It was also a huge hit in Japan. I also love the music very much in the film (bend and stretch etc.), koibito yo and all of the little references to Japanese culture like the musical stings from classic japanese mystery drama. The director Tetsuya Nakashima has a new film coming later this or early next year. |
