"Saying Good-bye to Toy Story 3" - CNN iREPORT INTERVIEW
Lee Unkrich: Typically if you have this number after the title of your film it automatically means it's a bad film and we wanted to see if we could break that curse. LU: Hi, I'm Lee Unkrich the director of Toy Story 3. Darla Anderson: And I'm Darla Anderson, the producer. LU: And we're here to answer a few of your questions. Question 1: I was wondering since you guys been all around the world and kinda viewed this with many different audiences... is there any one moment that resonates - like a worldwide audience - where it just seems universal? LU: Yeah, actually we've been very fortunate enough to travel all over the world with TS3 and see it with a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures. And I would say that the one moment that speaks to everybody is the moment toward the end of the film when all the toys are kinda in the most danger and heading in the incinerator and they all kinda take each others hands and face their end with dignity. Um, I don't think there was a single place that we visited that it didn't have a kinda profound effect on the audience. Question 2: I thought the ending of TS3 was really bitter-sweet. So I was wondering, as the creators of the movie, do you have a vision of ever seeing Woody again? LU: You know it's interesting question because (DA says "Yeah") we reveal in the movie that Bonnie only lives a few blocks away from where Andy lives and so presumably Andy could come back at some point and stop in to see how the toys are doing. And I think he would do that (DA says "Right"). I mean there's a nice feeling at the end of the movie like 'this is it', they're saying good-bye to Andy for the last time. But I don't think it has to be the last time. Question 3: I was wondering...uhhhh, what would be the next step for TS characters? A fourth movie or cartoons? LU: Well, you know we get a lot of people asking about TS4 and we take that as a compliment (DA says "Yeah") cause people had a great time with the other three films and they don't want to see it end. But we did try very hard to end the story of Andy and his toys and do it in a really love way (DA says "Right"). BUT, it's not really the end for the TS characters. DA: Yeah, there's some short films. LU: We're making a... hopefully a series of short films starring Woody and Buzz and the rest of the Toys. And the first one's gonna be out next summer on the front of Cars 2. Uh, so, uh we'll be seeing more of Woody and the rest of the gang for sure. Question 4: I have a question for Darla Anderson. As producer of the film was it your job to hire the mini marching band that Unkrich led through the studio on the last day of work for most of the animators? And, will we see footage of this on the DVD? DA: Hi Dominique! Yes, it was my job - kind of - to hire that band. And we will be seeing it on the DVD... *turns to LU* won't we? Yeah? LU: Yeah, well, yeah, the band was kinda made up of the animation leadership so Darla definitely did hire them. We didn't bring in a band from the outside we just got a bunch of equipment and uh, it was all the coordinators and supervisors and the animators on the movie who got together and formed that band. Um, and, yeah we will see it on the DVD (DA agrees "Yeah, yeah"). We try to throw everything in the kitchen sink to the uh, behind-the-scenes of the movies we make. So, you will see it. The legacy is kinda fun, we can just kinda have fun with the rest of our lives. (DA agrees "Yeah, yeah"). We've made these movies that people love and, uh, will be here long after we're gone (DA agrees "Yeah") and uh not many people get to experience something like that. DA: Yeah, I mean what a dream. What a dream... |

...Yeah. Right.
![]() (Although it's courtesy for producers to say "Well, never know...", let's remember, they only made TS3, number included, as a legal title obligation after Disney was threatening to make it without them. If shorts will keep the brand identification going, Pixar certainly plans to get more into franchise non-"art" shorts before their movies...But is the end for Woody in features? Off the record: Yes.) |

I'm fine with shorts. I think the story was so well done as a trilogy, it feels like they shouldn't go back to that well for a feature. I always view shorts seperately, so it's not like they violate that core story.
Given that they are looking at these shorts, I'd love to see shorts with characters from films that are unlikely to get sequels - like Nemo and Bugs Life. |
