Default Adding another OS to the PS3.

I was considering installing Ubuntu on the PS3, but it won't read the boot disc I made.

How do you add another OS to the system?

And if I don't like it, can I remove it?

I won't go as far as to say you SHOULD use YDL, however, if you don't, of if you install the free version of YDL and don't pay for the subscription, you get crap for video drivers

I don't KNOW that the suscription gives you better drivers, but surely it MUST!

I've loaded both YDL (free version) and Fedora... both ran fine, but looked like crap... the free video drivers did not support high rez.

If you follow the directions posted here somewhere, its pretty easy, set up a USB flash drive with a folder /OTHEROS on it, and copy in the otheros file. When you tell your PS3 to boot to "other OS" it looks for the /OTHEROS folder on your removeable media, and sets the boot loader so it will look for your ubuntu disk, just make sure you have the power PC compiled version of Ubuntu

As a recommendation, back up your PS3 to a USB drive, that way, after you reformat it, you can restore the PS3 files into the smaller PS3 partition.

As for removing it, simply reformat again, and the other OS is gone

Thanks Iceman. I thinking about doing this because I'm interested in trying out linux.

I have another question if you don't mind answering it...
If I reformat and it uninstalls the other OS, does it remove the partition in the hard drive? Can you remove the partition?

When you reformat, have it reformat back to a single big partition. although, remember, before you reformat, back up the PS3 partition, because it will get wiped... then restore it after the reformat.

If you just want to just try out linux, load feisty on a PC, it is far FAR more representative of how cool it is than loading it on the PS3 without paying for the YDL subscription.
