Default Dumb and Dumber question

I used to own the Dumb and Dumber BR (it was stolen). Anyway, I remember not being a fan of the unrated version...my question is does the BR have both versions on it, because I can't remember. I'd like to buy it again if I can just get the regular version.

Sadly only the unrated, which I don't like at all. It pretty much ruins the movie for me, and I have only watched it once since I bought it.
I really hope they will release the theatrical version some day soon on BD!

The added scenes totally mess with the pacing of the movie. Plus, they really feel like deleted scenes that were just thrown in to sell an "unrated" version of the film.

Also, where Lloyd and Harry were lovable nitwits in the theatrical version, they come off more like annoying jerkoffs due to the additional "unrated" scenes. I'm holding off on buying a bluray until a theatrical edition is released (I have both the theatrical and unrated DVDs).

For me the unrated version has a much more serious mood, due to added violence (Bird killing,...), and some really gross imagery (Toilet at the gas station, and other stuff).
It's disgusting, and for me, totally destroys the good-natured spirit of the theatrical cut.

I would have been ok with the additional song scene in the pickup truck, but this is way too much, although I enjoyed seeing more of Carrey, but some scenes are really better out (as mentioned previously).

Sorry, I know this does not follow the point of this thread but I can not resist:

Harry - I pictured the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.

Lloyd - Yeah, that John Denver was full of shit.

As for the quoted post, if memory serves the bird killing was always part of the movie, not just the unrated cut as was the toilet assault by sea bass.

Killing the bird was a huge plot point of how he got extra money by selling the bird to the blind kid.

The toilet assault is definitely extended, we get a bit of sea bass pubes, but it was always in the movie.

I noticed a few scene extensions. The hot tub scene is def extended and not really needed, but overall the unrated cut doesn’t ruin the movie for me. Still a top 5 all time comedy.

The PQ on this blu ray is pretty crappy, no doubt about that. Hopefully a 4K release can take care of that.

I'm going to have agree with the majority of folks in this thread and say that I definitely prefer the theatrical cut. I own the blu, but wish they'd release the theatrical. I remember when I bought it I watched it day of and said to my wife, "This has an almost opposite feel to it than the theatrical! How can they get away with this?!" I still prefer watching my DVD copy of the original.

BTW, to those concerned about the PQ of this film I would say that you're never going to be satisfied. Sorry, but it's true unfortunately.

I just can not get over how much I HATE this unrated cut of one of my all time favorite movies. This version of the movie makes Lloyd look like a complete pshyco and just a terrible person (specially the bathtub scene) instead of the loveable idiot in the theatrical. I am, like many, waiting for the theatrical cut on blu-ray (not holding my breath though) and will just watch the theatrical on dvd until then (or forever).

I watched the Unrated cut when I finally got the movie on Blu-ray, and I couldn't get over how drastically different the added scenes made it feel like a completely different movie.

I'm one of the few people who have no qualms with Extended / Unrated / Directors Cuts (of all movies, I think Kingdom of Heaven is the greatest example of why this should exist) - but this cut of Dumb and Dumber is by the far the most egregious. I ditched the BD not long after that and am just going to stick with my older snapper DVD in the interim. Since the theatrical cut is available in HDX on Vudu I'll probably get that next time there's a sale.

The definitive DVD is the Roadshow Entertainment one from Australia, since it's the only (disc) release that has the scene with Lloyd and the little old lady.

What happens in this scene?

I went down a long tangent and saw the below info for the first time from a 2015 book on John Hughes:

According to Kirk Honeycutt, Hughes wrote an incomplete initial draft of the Dumb and Dumber script; he eventually abandoned the script, sold it to the Farrelly brothers and had his name removed.

I was trying to find any other references to this being true, and found a 2017 Farrelly quote:

“Fortunately we were no good at either so we began writing screenplays. One of those scripts was ‘Dumb and Dumber.’ People told us, ‘Yeah, it’s funny but kind of dumb. We vented our frustrations to John Hughes, and he told us, ‘Why don’t you guys direct it?! You wrote it.’ We hired a camera man and a sound guy and all of a sudden we were filmmakers,” Farrelly said.

ive never seen an unrated movie ruin a theatrical cut like this. It changes the entire perception of the characters. Im hoping to forget i ever watched it.

best bet is to get the dvd (the old snapper case) and do D2D on vudu to get the HDX for 5 bucks. Not sure if this is better than a dvd upscaled on your blu ray player but either way, those are my only 2 options for watching this film now as i have eradicated the unrated edition from my possession.

hope someone puts out a blu. maybe if it gets a 4k.

I can't do the Unrated cut of Dumb and Dumber either. It changes the whole tone. I am happy that the deleted scenes still exist. It shows what editing can do. I also believe that's why Planes, Trains, and Automobiles works so well. I'd love to see the three hour cut of that, but I'm not so sure it will make it better for me, just a curiosity.

Dumb and Dumber To disappointed me. It lacked the heart of the first film and I think it had to do with the way it was shot and edited. The only time it felt like the first movie is the after credits sequence when it's just a long two shot of them on the Zamboni. Modern editing and sequencing is supposed to hold our interest longer, but there's nothing better than a long take of the natural chemistry between the two actors.

It's pretty sad the lengths one must go to enjoy the theatrical version of this film on Blu-ray.

Broke down some time back. Purchased the iTunes 1080p download authoring to Blu-ray. Nice step up from the DVD at larger screen sizes. Anything beats the unrated cut. The unrated cut blows. It blows chunks.

I don't mind the unrated cut but do prefer the theatrical cut better. I hope this gets a UHD at some point with both options included on the disc.

well, 4 years after last posting in this thread, and no new release of Dumb & Dumber. I did what a lot of people did a while ago, and got the HD version on VUDU with the $5 disc-to-digital program (now defunct). I still keep that old DVD just to have a physical copy, and I actually still have the Unrated DVD which I keep for the new special features that were produced (I won't be sitting through the Unrated cut of the film again, though.)

I'm not sure what the chances are that this film could get an UHD release with the theatrical cut finally restored-- maybe one in ten? A hundred? Maybe more like... one in a million.

Also, I haven't seen Dumb and Dumber To since it was in theaters. I'd be willing to give it one more shot if it pops up on Netflix or something. I doubt the experience will be any better, but there have been cases where my expectations trip up my experience with a film, only to appreciate it on a second viewing later when the dust is cleared.
