Default 80GB model of the american PS3 compatability pain

Quote:
With the 80GB model of the PS3, Americans were invited to feel some of Europe's pain. Gone was the promise of near-universal PS2 backwards compatability, replaced with a software-based emulation system where many games work, many games work with issues and some games do not work. At all. I say some of Europe's pain, though, because half the hassle of it all is in checking the PAL BC list on SCEE's torturous BC site to see if your games work. See, the site does not contain a search function. The newly-launched US search site does, allowing you to enter the name of your PS2 games into a small text field, conduct a search and be provided with a prompt answer. Awfully clever, that, and definitely ground-breaking technology. I bet SCEE are kicking themselves they didn't think of it

say goodbye to ff7 and hello to ff8 half workin' and things like that with the new software emulator sony installed instead of the motion engine ((wich's workin' good with my US ps3))

there is always going to be a software update to fix the issues. i don't think that would be the end of it.

It was necessary for Sony to remove the Emotion Engine in the 80GB PS3. This is the hardware that allowed it to have 100% backwards compatability with regards to the PS2 and the PS1. Now it just has software emulation, which currently works on about 80% of the games out there.

Honestly, your best option is just to use the 60GB PS3. If you really need more HD space for some reason, the HD isn't very hard to replace/upgrade.

Because I forgot, Sony had to remove the Emotion Engine because it increased the cost of the system drastically. From what I remember, Sony was taking a loss of 250 per unit on the 60GB PS3s at initial production.

You do realize that all the compatibility notes between the 60gb and the 80gb for Final Fantasy are identical, right?

[ add / edit ]
actually I take that back, the 60gb, hardware emulated version has more reported errors with Final Fantasy 12.

[ ah ]
Well will go through and itemize it, because noticing more differences now.

- these are 80gb reported problems not in the 60gb

FF X
Description: At various points throughout the Opening FMA sequence, the graphics jitter.

FF X-2
Description: During gameplay, when an FMV sequence plays, the subtitles do not appear.

FF XI [online expansions]
Description: Due to issues with the installation of Final Fantasy XI, the user is unable to play this title.

Final Fantasy XII
Description: The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 1.80: Upon boot-up, with the PS3 resolution set to 720p or 1080i in the VSH [Display] Settings, the PS/PS2 Upscale option activated, and the PS/PS2 smoothing option set to Off, when the Introductory FMV plays, a vertical line of graphical corruption appears on the right side of the screen. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 1.81.

Final Fantasy XII
Description: Throughout the title, with the PS/PS2 Upscale option set to Normal, the title's Aspect Ratio option is set to 16:9.

-- And by popular request, the errors that occur for FF7 and FF8
60gb/FF7
Description: On Disc 1, when the first battle begins at the Mako Reactor, a flashing black square appears around the user’s character's pointer.
60gb/FF8
Description: Throughout gameplay, when the user's party encounters a random enemy in the "world map", and the “pre-battle” transition screen appears, approximately 40 - 60% of the “pre-battle” transition screen appears black, and the remaining portion of the screen appears corrupted.

If sony wants the 80 GB to work with older games, they need to issue a firmware update ASAP.

They have, actually check that site that was linked.

There have been a number of firmware updates happening that have been improving the compatibility gameplay. They just haven't been on the Quick changelist when you patch.

I know about sony's website. I don't have the 80 and I don't plan to get one since I have the 60, but I was wondering if the 60 and the 80 are the same? I know that the 80 doesn't have the same kind of emulation that the 60 has. Any reason to upgrade to the 80, assuming that you already have a 60 GB ps3?

Why is there a thread even talking about this?

Who cares if the PS3 plays PS2/PS1 games or not?

This is the NEW GENERATION - you bought this console for NEXT GENERATION gaming and BLU-RAY - not to maybe play old, outdated games that normally sucked to begin with!

That is true, but no one cares about what you play. Yes there are ps3 games out right now, but Augest was a very slow month for games and it'll be a few weeks before more stuff is out. Some of us like to play old games or even old retro games.

lucky me. I got the first batch of Japanese 60GB PS3. No major compatibility issue. Lucky I did not picked up the EU version (because my games are japanese)
