Default Stephen King's The Stand

I LOVE this movie! I see they are playing it this Sunday on SyFy. A Blu would be awesome.

Yes it would. I'd love a Blu of Salem's Lot too.

Did you watch the remake of Salem's Lot? I tried watching it but didn't like it and couldn't get into it at all.

I still remember the first time I saw the mini series on TV. I'd buy THE Stand on BD in a heart beat. I wonder if it's popular enough for then to want to do it?

Would definitely be onboard for The Stand on Blu.

I had read the Stephen King novel in the late 1980's, and thought it was amazing - definitely SK's best book, and the post-apocalyptic/horror elements were very strong here. I liked the book so much that I held off on watching the mini-series until the 200X's, since I felt it couldn't hold a candle to the book.

I re-watched the regular DVD set a while back & did enjoy this, despite the just OK PQ.

While the mini-series wasn't as good as the book - but it was still decent. Pretty good production quality, for a '90's TV film. I did like how they kept a lot of elements from the book intact, i.e.:

-Having Nick Andros (played by Rob Lowe) be a deaf-mute.

-Having the Molly Ringwald character be pregnant (by an ex-bf) before the plague began; this culminates in the birth of the baby at the end.

- Keeping the storyline of having the two separate & distinct "groups" of survivors drawn to either the "good", i.e. Mother Abigail - or the "evil" - Randall Flagg, AKA "The Dark Man".

Also, though this is definitely a '90's-era TV movie, it still retains some '80's elements - notably the inclusion of Molly Ringwald & Rob Lowe - who were big teen stars in the '80's.

The soundtrack was also amazing, and included: "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult, the '80's hit "Don't Dream it's Over" by Crowded House; ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man", and "Eve of Destruction" (that the Larry Underwood character is singing). Great songs, that really fit the scenes they're placed over in the film.

Agreed on all accounts. I'm a big fan of Mick Garris, even though he's been hit and miss in his later career. Aside from his work with Masters of Horror, which remains his prominent contribution to horror cinema, the Stand is absolutely his best work. He did a lot with the material, especially in a time when you couldn't do much on TV. Mick Garris is kind of a behind-the-scenes guy in the sense that people don't know all the things he has done for the genre. On top of that, he's sorely represented on Blu-ray. Sleepwalkers and Psycho IV have a U.S. release, and Riding the Bullet has a region free German edition, but that's about it. Nameless Media did release a fantastic full series mediabook of Masters of Horror, but I'd love to see the Stand, the Shining, Critters 2, Bag of Bones, Desperation, and Quicksilver Highway finally come to 1080p.

The reason for the sub-par PQ was the mini-series was shot in 16mm film if memory serves correct.

Beyond a newer and better comprehensive 2k scan, it's still never going to amazing.

If Steven King's IT & SALEM'S LOT can be released on bluray....How is it that we haven't seen THE STAND yet? It's just as popular and classic as the other two that WERE released.

I really hope someone will pursue this and allow us an HD copy of this amazing and classic story on bluray.

The Stand was shot on 16 mm film but all of the post production was done on tape. I guess that prevents a HD release "without a star trek style makeover being performed."*

The Stand could obviously make a great AMC, HBO, or Netflix series in today's market. But, even with the constraints Garris had to work in with early 90's TV, he crafted an effective miniseries that was respectful to the book, its themes, and its author. The cast is great, the music is appropriate and well chosen, the cinematography is tight and atmospheric, and the story flows naturally. All of this working the way it does should be credited to Garris.

Agreed. Though it's obvious the novel by King had a lot more detail & scenes, - the mini-series is extremely well-done, and one of the best - if not THE best & most faithful adaptations of a SK novel I've ever seen.
