Default GoldenEye Blu-ray?

Are there any plans to release "GoldenEye" on Blu-ray anytime soon? It's one of my favourite Bond movies and I'd love to see it in HD. The picture quality on the DVD release isn't that good...

What extras would you like to see on it?

Next to the Starwars boxset, this is the Blu-ray that I want the most as its one of my favourite films. Unfortunatly there hasn't been any news on any future Bond Blu-rays as far as I'm aware of, but I hope they give us a good transfer when it does come out.

I would like to own this on on blu-ray too. I won't be holding my breath for anything spectacular though, since I doubt they spend the money to upgrade anything. Isn't MGM in bankruptcy? Don't they have the rights to the home video of the Bond films?

The wondeful Lowry restorations have alrready been done a few years ago, now all MGM needs to do know is "author" the blus'!

Goldeneye and The Spy Who Loved Me are the two bond films I desperately desire to own on blu-ray.

All of the Blu-ray 007 transfers come from the same source as the Ultimate Edition DVD releases. Unfortunately for Goldeneye this transfer is severely cropped, although the color timing seems a bit more natural.

The Ultimate Edition of Goldeneye is a disappointment. While the picture definition and overall appearance is improved, the entire film has been cropped. There still has not been an official statment as to why this happened so we can only assume this was a mistake. One possibility that some have pointed out at the HTF is that MGM could've used a print that was intended to later be pan and scanned for home video and TV broadcasts. Evidence for this is the placement of the titles during the title sequence. Capture 5 clearly shows that the titles are of a different font and placed on the screen differently for later panning and scanning. This is a disappointment.
I hope the cropping is fixed (although unlikely) for the BD release. Given the delay in releasing this title, they definitely have the time to do it if they cared to. This movie was shot with anamorphic lenses so unlike many modern Super35 releases there is no matting of the camera negative to achieve the desired aspect ratio so nobody can claim that the SE release had the incorrect framing.

MGM is out of bankruptcy and is preparing to make The Hobbit and Bond 23.

I'd expect the rest of the Bond Blus before the end of 2012, if not earlier. That is, if the Mayans don't get us....

Default Goldeneye Cropping

The cropping on the Goldeneye Ultimate Edition DVD from 2006 was disappointing.

The older Special Edition DVD from 1999, did have the full 2.35:1 image, but it suffered from major compression and does not look as good the current Ultimate Edition DVD.

I have heard that MGM gave Lowry a print that was going to be used for a Pan & Scan version on Goldeneye. Therefore cropping had already been done.

Even though the picture was cropped, I thought that the Ultimate Edition DVD was a very big improvement in picture & sound quality over the older Special Edition DVD. The colors were better, there was more detail, the sharpness was better, and all the artifacts were gone.

Since the transfers used for the James Bond Blu-Rays come from the same source that was used for the Ultimate Edition DVDs, Goldeneye would still be cropped even on Blu-Ray.

The only way to fix the problem is to once again restore the movie in HD. That would mean MGM would have to give Lowry a different print of Goldeneye that has the full 2.35:1 image.

It would be nice if they did, then the Blu-Ray would have the full image, then for those who are don't need a Blu-Ray, MGM could set up a Replacement Disc program for the Ultimate Edition DVD version.

I wouldn't expect to see this on Blu at least until the next Bond movie is ready for release. Earliest I could see it would be 4th Q of 2012. I would love to be wrong though. Goldeneye is my favorite of the Brosnan Bonds and had one of the better villains (IMO)

...from my perspective Le Chiffre is the best villain in all Bond movies!!

The whole situation is ridiculous. With MGM, ( now part of Sony), up and running after a near miss with bankruptcy, one would suppose that this would be an urgent release for them. It would certainly help them along the road to total solvency if they did put it on Blu-ray.

Come on MGM/Sony, get your finger out - and please make sure that packaging matches the others in the series which have already been released!

MGM is *NOT* part of Sony; they're simply partnering with Sony on several more films (including Bonds 23 & 24). In fact, the last I read (contrary to earlier reports) was that MGM is trying to renew its video distribution deal with Fox, thus making matching packaging more likely.

(Edit: Here's the article; link was posted last week in the main Bond thread.)

Having played a ton of Goldeneye on the N64, the movie will always hold a special place in my heart. I just hope the Blu-ray does not look as bad as the N64 game did.
