Default Blue Valentine Review Thread

I say congrats to all the hard working people on Blue Valentine because your film isn't going to be see by anyone in the theaters.

Quote:
While some may have thought The Weinstein Company was down for the count, Harvey Weinstein has finally pulled the trigger at Sundance as his company purchased director Derek Cianfrance’s relationship drama Blue Valentine - which stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams - for just over $1 million. Also, according to Variety, TWC is close to landing the documentary The Tillman Story, which is about former NFL player Pat Tillman and the cover up by our government after he died.

While I haven’t seen The Tillman Story, the buzz in Park City is the film is really good. But I did see Blue Valentine and it’s fantastic. You know how everyone always says how good someone’s performance is? Trust me when I say, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are amazing in this film, which is about the beginning and ending of a couple’s relationship. Director Cianfrance cuts back and forth during the movie and he uses bright colors and film for the beginning of the relationship, and close-ups with the Red camera for the end. It’s a great way to show the difference in time. With how good the movie is, it’s no surprise it landed a distributor. More from Sundance soon.

Yeah all this means is that no one will ever see the movie. Its nice they get paid but no one will get to see their work. TWC is really a joke. I look forward to seeing what happens w/ the Halloween franchise along w/ any other popular property. Hopefully Sony will take the films off their hands. We still don't even know the deal TWC and Sony struck to have Sony release Halloween II

OK thank god you got me for a second. I would have been pissed if we got any edits as it sounds like a really good movie. I also like how Gosling said the MPAA is messed up as it's OK to torture women and rape them on screen but 2 consenting adults and it's labeled pornography.

I suppose the one great thing about winning the ratings appeal is that I was actually able to see this today at my local AMC theatre. While I probably would not have gone out of my way to see this in a theatre otherwise, I am very glad I did, as I enjoyed the film immensely. In fact, it ties (and possibly beats) The King's Speech for my favorite theatrical viewing of the year.

What I enjoyed so much about the film was its almost lyrical realism. Somehow, the shifts backwards and forwards in Dean (Gosling) and Cindy's (Williams) romance seemed to enhance the believability of it all, and I ended up taking from it that Dean and Cindy got involved at a young age due to
[Show spoiler]his need to possess her and her need for emotional support
, and that as time went on,
[Show spoiler]Cindy grew to realize that Dean wasn't really the man she wanted to be with in the long term
, and that was the crux of the film. The rich, complex characterizations meant that I was never for or against one or the other, and I saw the tragic sort of grace (if that makes any sense) in the passion of their blooming relationship, because of their their need to escape from one another when their relationship became toxic. If you've been in a similar sort of situation before--and I have--then you can certainly identify with the characters, and find much value in seeing the film. Truly a 5/5, and I will definitely get a Blu-ray release.

Default Blue Valentine (2010) Review Thread

Genre: Drama, Romance
Rating: R for strong graphic sexual content, language, and a beating

Director: Derek Cianfrance
Writers: Derek Cianfrance, Cami Delavigne, Joey Curtis
Stars: Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson), Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain), John Doman (The Wire), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), and Faith Wladyka

Synopsis: The film centers on a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.

I'm aware of the Blue Valentine thread on this forum, but it isn't a review thread, so I decided to make one (with a poll and info and stuff), and maybe the mods can merge both into one.

I love this film so much. LIVE I REALLY EFFING LOVE THIS. I'm seeing Blue Valentine again tomorrow. I have to say I've never been so captivated by a film in such a long time.... MORE PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THIS FILM!

Who else bought the soundtrack on iTunes?

I'm not going to lie, the scene where Ryan Gosling sings "You Always Hurt the One You Love" might be one of my favorite scenes in film of all-time.

Does anyone own or compared this Blu Ray from other countries? The original US release was on a BD-25 with very low bitrates, I see most other discs, like the UK are on a BD-50. Since the audio and aspect ratio is the same, just wanted to see if the bigger disc allowed for higher bitrates and improved quality? I still love this film, any help would be appreciated!
