Bell Canada and other big telecom companies can now freely impose usage-based billing on independent Internet Service Providers (indie ISPs) and YOU.
This means we're looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay more for less Internet. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services. This will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, and your wallet. *CHARGING PER BYTE* Think about how much it'll cost you to post on here now, stream with Netflix, use MSN Messenger, every day basic usage could run you hundreds of dollars a month! Help put an end to this and stop Bell from being who they are. http://openmedia.ca/meter |

True, but this is just wrong. Bell is pissed off that they have to share all their network speeds so they want to gouge people who aren't even their customers!
I just want everyone emailing the CRTC telling them to have Bell piss off and petition this crap. |

Thanks I will check out that site later.
I'm with Rogers $60 a month (plus 13% tax) for a 10mb connection with 80gig limit per month before they start their BS charge of $2 per gig over ![]() There needs to be competition here... bad. I am tired of paying so much for my internet that is limited compared to places south of the boarder. I am tired of constant increases so my ISP can go out and buy sport teams, is this what we pay for? |

A buddy of mine in Europe, pays $45 for his cell phone bill, cable tv and massive inet connection. Canada is destined to forever be 3rd world in technology at this rate.

Thats fine, but they shouldn't be able to tell them how to run their business. If they want to charge more on the rental, so be it, to tell them they have to charge PER BYTE, is just complete bull leavings. Bell won't but that charge on their own customers though.

Bell (or any other telco, since this is not a Bell thing) does not make the laws, they can't stop anyone from building a network if they want. Like hatter pointed out, in the 90's Sprint Canada tried doing that for control in Montreal and Toronto, but it was not cost effective since it was much cheaper to use the existing infrastructure eventually they bled too much got bought out and the new owners renamed it and stopped the building and went back to using the existing infrastructure instead for individuals. On the flip side for large corporations there are several companies with their own infrastructure here in Canada that competes with Bell and the other Telco's, and every cable co also has irts own infrastructure.
