Default Annie (2014)

Quote:
Will Smith Teaming Up With Jay Z to Remake 'Annie' With Daughter Willow Smith in Lead

Late last week we heard that Will Smith might be developing a remake of Annie at Columbia/Sony, the idea being to create a star vehicle for his daughter Willow Smith. At the time there was a rumor that Jay-Z would be involved with the music for the film, just as he was in the production of Willow Smith’s hit single ‘Whip My Hair.’ Now Mr. Smith’s company has officially announced the remake and partnership with Jay-Z.

This is the first development from a partnership between Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment and Jay-Z, with the intent “to develop and produce major motion pictures.” Plural. All involved have already worked on the hit Broadway musical Fela!, and there’s the previously mentioned business arrangement between Willow Smith and Jay-Z’s label. So is this the second step in creating a Smith Family entertainment juggernaut, where the first step was the remake of The Karate Kid? Looks like it.

Here are the important bits from the press release, where Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad says,

Quote:
The time is right to bring back ANNIE to the big screen. Of course, we’re true believers in Willow’s talent and believe she will be perfect in this role. Combining Willow with the Overbrook team that reimagined Karate Kid and the spectacular JAY-Z makes this a dream project. A decade ago, JAY-Z proved that the power of the underlying Broadway property remains, by showing how these songs could be reinterpreted for a new generation with Hard-Knock Life. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with our friends at Overbrook as they launch this new venture.
We don’t know more — this seems like it is still pretty early, but I’d be surprised if it stalled out before going into production. We still don’t know much about the degree to which the material from the Broadway musical (music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan) which led to the John Huston movie will be changed for this version. Expect at least some revamping and/or modernization.

In other news, Will plans to change his name to "Christopher Culkin"...

(Sheesh, Will, why not plaster a "Ask Me About My Grandkids" bumpersticker on your hinder?--Enough with the freakin' birthday-party home movies!!!)

And yes, the 80's John Huston version went wrong in so many ways from the stage original, but at least they fixed most of the mistakes for the 90's Disney made-for-TV version...End of story. It's been done. Go home, Daddy-Will.

I'm just shocked at home many remakes have been announced in the last week....It's a little shocking, and unnerving. Hollywood needs to step up their game and stop with the ramakes

Hollywood has been tapped dry. Only a few new ideas by brave filmmakers like Nolan who are willing to try something new.

I don't know, but someone needs to stop this family before they remake every movie ever made.

Yes, putting Leonardo DeCaprio in a summer blockbuster that takes place almost entirely in his head was truly groundbreaking.

And Batman vs the Joker?

How do they come up with this stuff???

(Nolan's a good filmmaker but Memento was ten years ago. I don't begrudge him the big paychecks one little bit but brave and new he ain't)

Are you really trying to say the idea of Inception was not original? Even if it did borrow things from other movies it is still more original then most things out of Hollywood these days. Yes he did Batman movies but the point was he was willing to take a shot a something new after TDK.

there are others but they're low budget and just have limited releases. Most are dramas and that's not Hollywood's thing right now. What's in is action, Super Hero and Remakes that can use 3D.

Clearly Nolan didn't steal Inception from a Donald the Duck comic, oh wait http://www.cracked.com/article_19021...seriously.html lol

I think I've lost all respect for Will Smith. I am going to make a movie version of Fresh Prince and I'll play Will and cast Jon Header as Carlton.

Ppl should stop saying things like that, like Hollywood is on a different planet. Mankind has run out of originality, imo. I also apply that logic to political views.

Is it any wonder why studios like PIXAR garner so much critical and financial success??

Because--unlike Dreamworks--they DON'T hire The World's Most Obnoxious Narcissist, whose refusal to play any characterization in his parts, recent cinematic attempts to martyr himself on any nearby tree, and whose dreams of a world-conquest dynasty have created one of three celebrities whose mouth we the public would so dearly love to stuff a suspiciously-filled sock into?

(Translation: It ain't Evil Hollywood coming up with this idea....We have a NAME to our pain. And if you bought a copy of I Am Legend, you support such terrorist acts.

I'm on board with this even if it sucks because it will introduce the movie to a whole new generation and probably means the original will finally come out on blu-ray.
