Duel Layer no pause - Blu-ray Forum

Switching over from DVD the first thing I noticed or should I say didn't notice was the layer changes

. DVD was the cats *** and a lot of people think it still is, it's a great format but the layer chages took me out of the experience a little bit. Blu Ray has no layer changes does anyone know how they eliminated the pauses. Just call me Curious George.

Well I speculate that it works the same way a skip-free feature works on a CD/MP3 player.
It reads ahead of where the film is, stores the information, then changes layers and picks up where it left off all before the film can catch up.

It is also how some of the other news features work that Close Encounters is getting.

Part of the spec was "seamless layer changes'

Either the drives are fast enough to rejoin the stream before the buffer catches up, or there's a relative larger buffer.

The layer changes on DVD always bothered me because I had just enough time to say "WTF" and then the movie started to play again. It gets me every time.

And after Blu it's even more noticeable/annoying now on dvd.

The one I always remember was on Gone In 60 seconds . . . HORRIBLE layer change, pulls you right out of the movie. I got this on Blu, and I was more excited than any normal person should be by not seeing a hiccup in the playback.

Ironically, studios have argued since the beginning of DVD time that the average consumer _doesn't mind or care_ about these layer pauses according to their research.

I'd love to see that research because I've watched a LOT of DVD movies... and A LOT of those were with other people. During those times when a 'pause' happens it's inevitable that at least someone blurts out, 'OMG! I HATE THAT!!'

Not sure where the data came from in that research, but I suspect the answer would be somewhere between Lalaland and Candyland.

It's the same research that says people don't give a shit about the movies, as long as the lame extras are plentiful.

Funny, I never had a problem with layer changes. I always thought buffering took care of that. Must be the player you use.
