Recently bought a new Sony Blu Ray BDP-S580 player.. It seemed to work fine for 3 days, but yesterday I went to turn it on and the screen looked as if it was getting bad connection. Like a bad antenna connection. I changed the HDMI cables, went in and set it on 1080p, Auto, etc., but the only setting it'll play is on 480i. The TV works great with Dish Network. I even switched inputs to see if this was the problem. I'm thinking my Blu ray has just failed. Anyone have any suggestions with this type of issue? I did a full reset on the Blu ray, and checked all my setting. The screen is bad even if you play Blu rays..so it's not a internet problem.

I had the S570 for about two weeks. I watched Resident Evil 3D, Rise of the Planet of Apes, Saving Private Ryan, Independence Day and Star Wars 1 on the 570. I go to put in Star Wars 2 and it stops on 0:07 every time. 570 just froze up and would have to unplug power cord to reset the player. Tried Star Wars disc 1 again and froze at 0:07. Put in previous movies watched and same thing, froze at 0:07. Finally last disc tried wouldn't play at all. So I take it back and upgrade to S580 since its all they had in.
Watched on S580 Jose Wales, U571, and Narnia with no problems. Put in Star Wars 2 and froze at 0:07. Put back in other movies and they work fine. Put in 4 of the 6 Star Wars disc and all freeze at 0:07. The player revs up loud trying to read the Star Wars disc.. Even rev up when I put in Resident Evil when loading the disc and it didn't do that prior. Side not that I tried the Star Wars discs in an older LG you ray player and they all worked. Should I call Sony for firmware disc update? Mine is behind with 263 firmware. BD Live is turned off. Any suggestions? Thanks Smoov |

if you are up to date on your firmware, you can try putting a USB thumbdrive in the player using the usb port in the back and see if that helps any, usualyl a 2gb thumb drive is sufficient |

Long story short, I only have 4G Verizon ISP. Won't have high speed internet until May when I move back to the city. So my player isn't hooked up to a network.
I called Sony for the firmware update disc. I've been watching torrents that I extracted as AVI on my 8GB thumb drive through my S580. Is there a way to use the flash drive to update the S580? |

Updated firmware via the disc Sony sent me. Put in Star Wars and it froze at 0:07 for about 5 seconds then it worked. Don't understand but as long as it works I'm alright with that.

Wish now I had just bought a cheap DVD player, since we paid a lot more to get a blu ray player, with no improvement in picture. The main positive is the great sound and the ability to play the songs and old time radio shows on my MP3 player. Hope we have just done something wrong to not get the best picture, but would like to know if there is anything we can do to get a blu ray quality picture. |

Our TV is a Panasonic TC-P50C1 which is about three years old and is a 780i model. The s580 setup shows under BD-DVD output as 1080/24p. We are using Monster HDMI cables.

Try On page 22 of your Sony s580 manual, look at Output Video Format set it to Auto. And set your 1080/24 output to Off. See if that helps. |

Underworld 54,
That was the word I was trying to think of...jawdropping going from DVD to blu-ray. Hope we have all the right cables in the right places. We specifically ordered blu ray movies from Netflix to make sure we got the blu ray experience, which we have yet to experience, but figured like the HD experience in cable compared to non-HD, it would be something special. What we saw in the blu ray movies was not special. It must be a technical problem, that we don't have the know-how to fix. |
