Who or how many other people do you know in the real world that has Blu-ray or buys Blu-ray's other than yourself?
For me unfortunately most people I know have not yet converted to Blu-ray, though alot of them say they plan on getting a Blu-ray player at some point in the future. My dad did get a Blu-ray player last year though, and has since purchased a decent amount of Blu-ray's. |

A couple of my friends have Blu-ray, and in September last year my college invested in a big HD television, player and Blu-ray burner. I take a degree course in media, and as we film and edit our assignments in HD, the staff thought it was necessary to make the upgrade, so that we could burn and show our work on Blu-ray. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when I found this out.
![]() My sister doesn't have it, but I managed to convert my 12 year old nephew into wanting Blu-ray, which made me feel so proud that I bought him Toy Story 3 for Christmas last year. With any luck they won't be too far off getting their own, they came round to my house and took one look at Avatar and thought "wow". And my stepdad has had a PS3 since Christmas but so far no Blu-ray films, I will aim to buy him his first for his birthday in July. It may be True Grit, which I pre-ordered as I want to see it but if I dislike it then I will pass it on to him. |

My middle brother has a PS3 and blu ray burner. It was a workmate that got me into it - I was buying a lot of DVD's and he kept saying I should make the leap to Blu ray - did it and been addicted since.
Apart from that though, I don't know of anyone else. Think I will get my parents a player at xmas. |

My best friend converted to blu-ray with her PS3 purchase about 3/4 years back (after a lot of convincing from your's truely, though she doesn't half love Blu-Ray / HD now) A couple guys at work have upgraded in the last 12 months but other than that, I dont know anyone else. Quote:
It wasnt until the likes of The Dark Knight that I got the 'blown away' feeling from the picture quality. Like you say, it depends on the movie, for example, Chasing Amy is not good for showing what Blu-Ray can do, but many CGI/pixar type movies are perfect. Also found that after watching so much HD via Blu-ray's, I hate going back to SD TV. THEN I can REALLY tell the difference and it kinda made me appreciate Blu-Ray all the more Last edited by yeslek; 04-14-2011 at 02:22 PM. |

However, most other people I know either have the HD tv with no blu-ray player or PS3 or vice versa. either way, its safe to say that the jump from DVD to Blu doesnt appear as big as VHS to DVD. Mainly because we went from analogue warmth to digital sharpness first time round and now the jump is more fine tuning that another drastic change. |

again, that harks back to 'good example movies' ie Avatar, Pixar etc
depending on the material, the improvement in quality can be so subtle to even the keenest eye. Like I said before, it wasnt until I went back to SD that I truely saw the drastic improvement of Blu-Ray. I suppose having side by side examples is what you need |

Viewing distance and type of TV, and the settings the TV are on, can all add to people not seeing, or quite noticing the difference. I have one friend who is really into movies and has quite a few BRs, not as many as some on here, and there are about 3 people at work who have BR players or PS3 and have a few Blues in there collection (not many though) Apart from that I know no-one outside of a few forums. One of my friends who loves collecting movies can't see the point in it, especially with the prices of some of the movies she buys like some trilogies. My hubby and I can pick up second hand DVDs for £1-2 at local car boot sales (and yes there genuine copies) so for that price I could easily see why so many are not adopting BR. Not everyone goes online so the shops with there high BR prices are certainly not helping. Until the price drops a lot then there isn't going to be as many new adopters. As has been said its not like going from VHS - DVD, too some (like my relatives) 'its still just another movie on a disc with a higher price tag, that I would need a new type of player to view the films on, I can't justify the extra cost at the moment.' My local rental shop just sold off its entire Blu-ray collection dirt cheap. I asked the manager why and he explained that they only made about 40 euro a week in rentals from them. On one hand it was a great deal for me, since I was able to pick up a stack of discs dirt cheap, but a bit depressing overall to see the format die a death (at least here in Dublin anyway)

Hardly anyone. MY brother has a PS3 but barely even uses it for games let alone as a blu-ray player. My partner has a few Blu-rays that she got in dual packages like Beauty & the Beast and Metropolis steelbook but doesn't have a player.
I've done DVD/Blu-Ray A/B comparissons with family but it's hard for them to really "get it". Problem like many is that they're too far from the screen. Even though they spent over a grand on a 42" a couple of years ago! It's from personal experience in my own circle that I believe blu-ray will continue to be a rather large niché market rather than overtaking DVD. DVDs still do the job for many people and they're extremely profitable. Since you can get many DVDs so cheap it's hard to see the masses making the switch even if they have a HDTV. |

The only person, was my ex-teacher other than him, no one else.
My cousin is always talking about getting a Blu-ray Player for his 42" Samsung Plasma but he ends up with a new iPhone every time. Blu-ray is only truly usable on HD TV's because it can be seen the high improved quality video. |
