Arrow SAMSUNG Wants Out Of The Hard Drive Market.

Quote:
SEOUL—Samsung Electronics Co. is considering selling its money-losing hard-disk-drive business to raise cash to invest in new growth areas, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Samsung is looking to sell the unit for $1.5 billion, but it may consider a deal under $1 billion, the person said.

A potential buyer for the business is hard-disk maker Seagate Technology Inc., the person said.

A spokesman for the Scotts Valley, Calif.-based company declined to comment.

Samsung Electronics, the world's biggest maker of memory chips ...

Very disappointing. Funny how I think their tv's are nothing but average (yet everyone eats them up) but I defend their wonderful hard drives to no end. Why? Because they are perfect. Especially for those who don't run ssd's.

Other companies who shell-out hotter-running and slower drives can survive (and every lemming buys one), but a company who puts out extremely high-quality products wants out. Their new Spinpoint F4 series was perfect too. I was eagerly anticipating a 3TB hard drive from them. I highly doubt they'll be releasing any new products.

Whoever buys it will most likely crap-up their technology. Seagate bought Maxtor, then the quality dipped with their products.

'tis sad news. Their hard drives were excellent. Silent, cool and reliable.

Guess I should buy some OEM spinpoints at microcenter for 50 bucks based on that review

^^^

I use this for an external hard drive hooked-up to a usb 3.0 enclosure: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0349903 Don't be fooled by the 5,400 rpm speed. This sucker flies. It's $5 less on newegg.com though, if you use promo code EMCKFHH22 which ends today.

For whatever reason the 320GB F4's are no longer listed on Microcenter's website. However, they might still have them in-store. I had two ($43 each) in Raid 0 and it came extremely close to my G.Skill Phoenix Pro ssd drive in read/write speeds (obviously not in access time though ).

I seen them on sale at frys, but had my doubts on their quality because of their tvs and bd players. Been trying to find a new hard drive but I hate segate and the other that have on sale are the green ones from WD. I guess I should grab a pair in may.

Since they are considering I hope they dont sell it or lower their quality.
