Default DVD packaging

I know Disney is notorious for this, but who in their right mind would want DVD packaging of blu-rays? They're bigger/bulkier, etc.

Actually, from what I've seen, Disney clearly states what packaging they are releasing for their blu ray movies. On the header of the slip or the case, it will usually say "BD + DVD" or "DVD + BD". Whichever one comes first is the type of packaging. This is pretty much Disney's way of organizing the types of cases.

The strategy for this is for people who still collect DVDs, to buy those cases and basically plant Blus into their customer's homes.

I agree though. DVD packaging is so bulky and unattractive.

I prefer blu-ray cases for consistency sake but if dvd packaging was the only choice like funimation titles, I wouldn't cancel. Quality artwork is the key. It makes any case look good or bad.

Most rag on the black dvd cases. If clear dvd cases were used primarily, that would be freaking sweet. I love it when dvd's come in clear cases. I'd take them over blu-ray cases.

I left a post on another thread mentioning how I've attempted to "blu-ize" ALL my movies by moving my old DVD's into blank blu-ray cases (and transferring or making custom artwork for them). So I'm definitely not a fan of the reverse - blu rays disguised as DVD's.

I think in my case (pun intended), I just really love the look of blu-ray cases. I love the translucent color it provides when all your cases are uniform on a shelf and all the sizes match etc. So having some films in blu cases, while others are in DVD cases, next to others that are in digibooks etc is exactly what I try to avoid from a display perspective.

I'm definitely a Disney fan though!

I was thinking of doing that once as it would save a lot of room but decided against it as it would be weird having non BD movies in a blu-case. How much room did it save for you as I may consider it again.

Well my ultimate reasoning for doing it was a combination of wanting ALL my movies (DVDs or blus) to be uniform from a storage standpoint along with not wanting there to be "missing gaps" in my Top 100/200 movies just because a blu release may not be available yet.

In other words, if I want to watch Jaws for example, I don't have to wait for it to come out on blu or look at an empty slot where there is no "Jaws" in my collection. In effect, I can turn my DVD copy into a "blu version" from a storage standpoint. This is especially good for some of my favorite foreign classics that might otherwise never see a blu release. If they do come out, then I'll surely add them. If not then I just use the DVD in a blu case and all is still well, aesthetically speaking. It only gives itself way if you go to watch it...LOL. But I'm already aware it's a DVD. For me, it's more about just making sure I have SOME form of the movie first and foremost. The way I see it, Blu-ray is preferable but a DVD disguised as a blu is still the next best option!

It's sort of my personal storage equivalent of how the AFI Top 100 Films list is maintained. As the titles come out on blu, the titles go from black font to blue. But at least every title (in some form) is present.

But it does save space storage-wise as well. I can't really say how much because I didn't start to file away my "Top 200" movies in this fashion until recently (when I fell in love with the blu cases and started buying blus). Before that, my DVD copies were largely just stored in drawers but not in spine-viewable library fashion, as I'm doing now.

Thanks for that. I was wondering why the recent release of Cars had two different versions if both were a blu-ray/DVD combo pack. I didn't pay any attention to the cases, except one had a blue border and the other a yellow top.

I cant believe how huge DVD cases are compared to blu-rays. after buying blu rays for so long, dvd cases look even bigger than before.

I remember how HORRIBLE the VHS cases were. Those God-Alful Disney clam-shells that are now suffering from dry-rot, cracking all over the place, and all those cardboard OPEN-BOTTOM cases...I mean, who was the idiot who designed THAT? VHS's falling out of the bottom everytime you pick it up, good grief.

The DVD cases are much better than VHS, no doubt. But they started coming out in differant sizes and colors and at first it seemed cool, but they starte dlooking terrible on the video shelf, no consistancy.

So far, Bluray cases are consistant, and I'm hoping we dont start gettign differant colors, becasue I LOVE the consistancy look on teh shelf. I HATE huge-bulky special design cases, like The huge packages of TEN COMMANDEMENTS or SOUND OF MUSIC. Good grief, you need a whole shelf JUST for those films alone.

bought The HULK on bluray and it came in a green case, but I switched it to a blu one, so it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb on my shelf.

I also understand that this is ALL personal choice, and everyone is differant, so I respect whatever people do to their own collection.

I don't notice that much of a difference. Perhaps it's because I have vhs's behind my dvd's and blu-rays. VHS cases especially the clamshell ones make any other packaging look slim and attractive.

I prefer the Blu-ray cases over DVD cases just because of the less space they require. Other than that, I find the cases ugly. I prefer black cases because blue could clash with the cover art. And the Blu-ray bar on the top isn't necessary. It's not like DVD, VHS, or Beta had a huge bar to tell you what it was. A little logo in the corner was enough for them.

Agreed. So many new Blu-rays I buy, I open and a piece of the top of the spine falls off.

I think if HD-DVD had won the war, we would have seen more of a variety of colored cases. Since Blu-ray won, the blue case is kind of out of namesake. I would like to see more of a variety, regardless.

They didn't feel big until I started buying Blu-ray's too. Just the same as VHS didn't feel big until I bought DVDs.

And they're both bigger than CD cases. Why? They're all the same sized discs.

I think the size difference was meant to not confuse the consumer. If DVDs were released in a CD case, stupid people would buy them and try putting them on their CD player.

Also, the design of the DVD and Blu-ray case is meant to rub the back of the disc less than a standard CD case.

I doubt that. Still too much money to be made, to kill off the format. When DVD came out, people were thrilled to dump VHS. They were bulky and looked like crap compared to DVD. The jump from DVD to Blu-ray isn't as dramatic to a lot of people, or they just don't care. So I can't see DVD really ever fully dying off. At least not for 10+ years.

Well I will get some hate for saying this but I think BD cases+artwork suck compared to traditional DVD cases+artwork.

Although I prefer BD cases overall, I'm in agreement with you about the artwork. I hate the tendency studios have now to overcrowd the cover with irritating text and images. The covers are simply too small to fit all that information on without compromising the artwork.

But apart from that I don't see a huge difference.

That's exactly how I feel. If they at least kept them the same height, they could just transfer the original cover art. Also on the back, the synopsis of the movie was usually the main point of focus. Now all you see are technical specs and the words "High Definition" all over the place . But I guess it's what's inside the case that really matters.
