Really?
![]() I can't believe such a beautiful piece of movie making is getting so little attention, both here on these boards and from the studios, it would seem, for the release is pretty bare bones, as far as I know. It would have been nice if they had included the MAKING THE MISFITS documentary, which had a very limited release on DVD and it's been out of print for a while, now. |

I pre-ordered it, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
classic films in general have a hard time getting much love anywhere anymore. it's just the sad reality of a world obsessed with superhero action movies. (on the plus side, dvds of a classic films are a steal these days; I can't seem to buy enough) ![]() |

It's a classic movie with two very excellent actors. My main problem is Monroe that I never liked or care about. The only movie I would care to purchase with her in is How To Marry A Millionaire and it's mostly because Lauren Bacall is in it.
Still anyone should at least rent this one to see it once. Last edited by P@t_Mtl; 05-12-2011 at 07:17 PM. |

It's on my 'to buy' list for sure. It really is a shame so many classics are being released bare bones. This and Some like it hot deserved a Digibook release at the very least.
For a lot of titles missing the extras I just buy a 2disc case and stick my DVD in it. Considering even when they do release extras a lot of times its just standard def anyway. While there is a nice piece on the film on Blu-ray.com we still don't have a review. Does it come with any extras? Last edited by Banned User; 05-12-2011 at 02:15 PM. |

I am waiting for amazon to deliver it. I just got it "Some Like It Hot" in the mail.
For me, Marilyn is the SOLE reason why i want this film. I adore in this role and am glad it's finally on Blu-Ray. |

I think that's exactly MGM's approach to most classics on BD--no restoration, no extras other than those that happen to be sitting out on the shelf (i.e., recent DVD editions), just find an HD transfer and dump it to BD. That's exactly what they did to Rain Man, and from their UK versions it appears Midnight Cowboy & Platoon are getting the same treatment. I think MGM's only 2011 catalog BD they put any real effort into was Dances With Wolves.

She had a few breakouts of actual acting--Seven Year Itch, River of No Return, Don't Bother to Knock ( ![]() Misfits, though, is one of those good synergies of puppydog-smitten directors (or, in this case, ex-husband screenwriters) wanting to show what a Naive Sweetie she was, and giving her enough non-acting space to be natural in it. If she can't act, at least let her play something close to herself where she doesn't have to. If you had to see only one MM movie, "Seven Year Itch" obviously (and more for her likability than the dress-flip), but if you're curious enough to see two, Misfits will probably be the one to drop the guard of any Marilyn-hater. |

Watched this last night. The PQ is pretty good considering it seems to be the same master used for the 2001 DVD. There is good detail present with the exception of close-ups of Marilyn where apparently John Huston used 'softer' shots. Majority of the movie has very good detail though.
Only Special Feature is the trailer. MGM.....you ought to be ashamed of yourself with releasing this basically barebones and not even a slipcase. Shame on you. Great Blu-ray to have though. Last edited by BluPat; 05-20-2011 at 07:28 AM. |

"... was the last film for all of them..."
Minor correction: If you're including Montgomery Clift in the "all of them," the statement is not accurate. Clift made at least two more complete films, including "Freud," John Huston's brilliant but seldom-seen biopic with Clift in the title role. |

I just watched this for the first time last night.
I thought Montgomery Clift stole the show. He out acted all of them. The whole lot of them were a bunch of messed up people. I spent the whole movie waiting for each of them to have a mental breakdown. Hence, the title "The Misfits" |

![]() OK, she's no Audrey Hepburn who was far more talented and had the smarts to stay away from booze & pills and retire at the top of her career. But Monroe was an outstanding comedic actress who knew her strengths and played them perfectly. Several of her movies are my favorite comedies, and How to Marry a Millionaire is tops. Yes, Bacall is perfect in it (and also the much less known Betty Grable) but so is Marilyn - how can you not love her performance singing "A kiss . . on the hand may be quite continental, but diamonds are a girl's best friend"? ![]() |

It's certainly a pity that this didn't get the special edition treatment (I think a new documentary about it was made recently but including that stuff means paying for the rigths), but I will buy it soon anyway.
If there is one old star that still gets media attention regularly, that would be Marylin Monroe (with James Dean coming second). Even youngsters nowadays have heard her name some time or other. So I would expect to see her movies released on blu-ray (and Dean's) sooner or later. I'm sure Fox is restoring Marylin's with the same technology and care they did "The robe" and "The sound of music". I remember they were released as a boxet on dvd back in 2000. I wish we could see them out soon. Not sure what they're waiting for. It seems every year it's some kind of anniversary of hers. Either birth, death, whatever. I recall seeing news items on tv about her this summer. |

What you say is true, but keep in mind that although the classics don't sell as big as today's blockbusters do, they have been steadily earning money for the studios for decades. Think of what these films have been through after their initial theatrical releases: revival theaters, 16mm prints for colleges (that's how I saw many of them), network and cable TV rentals, video rental store, and now Netflix; also sales on 16mm, Betamax, VHS, laserdisc, DVD, HD DVD, and now Blu-ray. |

I bought the BD because it had three iconic stars -- Gable, Monroe and Clift whose lives at that point in time coincidentally (or maybe not -- I think John Huston chose these three for a reason) parallels the three characters in the movie. Gable and Clift were great stars and prove their worth by being at their best form, and Monroe will forever be the sexiest star Hollywood has ever seen. She's lost nothing in this movie. The movie has a strong and powerful story, and acting. It deserves better than it has received.
PS It also has Eli Wallach, another excellent actor. |

The movies not bad. It is Monroes last film so I guess thats important. I'm guessing these movies just aren't for everybody. I particularly do no enjoy 60's Hollywood cinema. It all seems too stylized for that decade. The real golden era is the 1970's.

I LOVE 'The Misfits'. I have a LaserDisc, VHS, DVD and now the Blu-ray. Montgomery Clift is one of my favorite actors. Marilyn Monroe.....I love her as well. And of course Clark Gable. The movie is classic Hollywood. My Blu-ray hasn't arrived yet but when it does, I will be watching it immediately.
I even changed my avatar to it's cover! Last edited by BluPat; 05-14-2011 at 03:39 AM. |
