South Korea Hero & House of Flying Daggers

Both are "Content Zone" releases. Content Zone appears to be one of those companies that just ports existing discs from other territories. Both have English subtitles. Hero has the same extras as the US disc, so it appears this release might be the US version with a lossless Mandarin track. I have no idea if it will use the International or Miramax subtitles or if it will have the map at the beginning. HOFD has the same extras as the UK release, so I am not sure if it is taken from that version or another (as the specs for the audio match the Dutch/Taiwan versions).

Both movies are now available for preorder at K2DVD @ 32.99 USD each. No listing from Yesasia yet.

I hope all the waiting paid off and we finally have a solid release of Hero.

Wow finally, could it be that we get a "good" Hero?? As you said, I want the same picture quality as the US disc since that's the only one based on a better master and a good lossless audio track. The extended cut would be a nice bonus but nothing I would expect.

House already got the new HK disc so this is probably based on same.

It appears Yesasia has pulled the listing for "Hero" from the US/Canadian site. People who order from the Global Yesasia site can still purchase it.

Yeah, I had my YesAsia order cancelled. Used K2DVD instead and it shipped today.

So what's the best version to own Hero? The Director's Cut bluray on Nova seems like a mighty fine deal at the moment and from what I vaguely remember reading on here, it's a pretty good edition, but I wanna know if it is the edition to buy for this film. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I'm also curious about the Nova Media release. I haven't seen Hero, and I naturally gravitated toward the uncut DC. However, someone who has seen told me that, in their opinion, the advantages of the DC over the TC are a little overblown, and that the TC is tighter in a good way, but the US subtitles are simplified and the US PQ is so-so. Having not seen the film, I have no opinion on the difference between the two cuts, but if Nova Media has better PQ and better subtitles, then I want to get that one.

i have the Nova blu-ray of Hero, just watched it last night, and it's an excellent transfer. Just occasionally there's a hint of grain, but overall the picture is beautifully clear and the cinematography looks amazing. Sound is also very clear indeed - though i wasn't listening in surround, so i can't vouch for that.

In the subtitles there's a strange occasional visual snafu where the word "To" and certain numbers (100, 1000) have an extra space after the first letter or number - but otherwise the subtitles seemed absolutely fine to me. In fact, the translation seemed rather clever and subtle: there are times when it's more formalised - "How quick is thy sword" - and when it's more intimate and conversational, there are just a few contractions (not many). To me this seemed like a nicely-judged translation that allowed for variety according to context rather than slavishly sticking to a single mode of speech, which would have made less sense.

All in all, highly recommended!

Hero is one of my fave movie of all time, infact I would put it at 2nd place, just after Mononoke Hime
So I am a little sad there hasn't been yet a proper release
from the info I have gathered PQ is quite bad, with lots of EE and black crush
there is also review on the main site, confirming that
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Hero-...6/#UserReviews

if anybody else can give his/her take on this I'd greatly appreciate

See my comments a few posts back. The Nova Hero Director's Cut is excellent.

Have to disagree, watched it yesterday and picture quality was not very good, I agree with the user reviewer mentioned in the post above by krelian

This is one of my most favorite movies, it deserves a proper 4K release

Screencaps are now available to compare to the US release, and the Korean release looks a lot better IMO. However, I'm no expert in telling a good transfer, but I do like the contrast more. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=15921&d2=15920&c=6048

The exact opposite for me. While I would perhaps prefer a bit more contrast in the US release, the Korean release seems to have severely crushed blacks, blown highlights, and oversaturated colours. A lot of detail gets lost.

Subjectivity aside, the reviewer states that the subtitles are the same as the Miramax which isnt true. The Miramax translation is unique to the Miramax print which has its own opening crawl and closing text.
