Australia Snowtown (2011)

Did a search and couldn't find anything.

I just read in the latest Aussie Empire Magazine, that the Snowtown murders have been made into a film.

Now I don't know how many people know about the murders, but I saw the 'Crime Investigation Australia' episode about it a while back (it also aired again yesterday coincidently the same day I bought the Empire mag), and it was the most brutal serial killings in Australian history. I have watched many, many episodes of Crime Investigation Australia, as I find them interesting, but the Snowtown episode was probably the most terrifiing episode they have ever done. The re-enactments went almost too far imo (I think they toned them down after this episode).

I am interested to see how this film works.

Empire asks the question, 'is it too soon', and I too, am asking this question for Australians here on this forum. I know many people in New Zealand questioned the release of the film 'Out of the Blue' here, which dealt with our own notorious mass murder spree (Aramoana).

Anyone who has not heard about Snowtown (the killings), see if you can watch the Crime Investigation episode online.

I heard about this about a month ago and am really interested in seeing it, but the useless Cinema here isn't showing it, so will have to wait for the Blu ray release.

I've seen the episode on Crime Scene Australia a few times and it was really chilling and brutal, but one of the most interesting cases they have shown.

Also the trailer of this looks very good.

Snowtown(2011) wins special mention at critics week Cannes.
Debut feature for Director Justin Kurzel, some unknown cast members debut.
Australian films always excel at cinematography the comparison being films set in Montana (too many to mention) and Texas, Hud, (regardless of having been filmed) in B/W, it's the light.
Snowtown could be accused of being too artsy with the subject however that would be unfair of the intent of the scriptwriter and Director.
How do you tell an audience a factual modern horror story without portraying the mundaity of the facts as they were.
Like most serial killers Bunting (main protaginist) and Vlassakis (accomplice) were (are) complete nobody's who became somebodies (Bunting in particular) by their actions (killing alot of innocent people).
International audiences will struggle with this film, as it helps to be aware of the facts of the story, but also because of the fact that it uses local cues for local people, (televisions on in the background (domesticity)showing Test Cricket Match whilst a silent rape is commited, local Comedy shows playing whilst dismemberment is occurring.
Compulsion(1959) would be worth watching before Snowtown.
The film is about the nature of relationships.
Like the Nietzsche loving Leopold and the compliant Loeb there is somewhat of the Carl Jung Superman theory at work here, the ego,the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious.
Disturbing viewing Highly Recommended.

"Is it too soon",
No the victims are victims from that second it takes to be a victim.
Life is life and sometimes it is cruel.
Healing begins from the moment you are a victim.
Flimmakers almost have a duty to tell stories as soon as they can.
A young boy tortured and killed in Syria is uploaded to Youtube and his death may bring about regime change for the better.
Filmmakers have longer to consider all the facts and emotions(the world needed Shindlers List).
The story of United 93 needed to be told as soon as possible the French documentary of 9/11 needed to be shown.
Families and friends of victims can benefit from viewing accounts of their loved ones final moments.
Personally having had a friend killed by a serial killer,I found documentary accounts of their demise totally distressing, but now I think that it was a positive thing to give the mind some picture to work through rather than my own imagination.

Great, the way you set your posts out, at first glance it just looks like some kind of bot Spam.

So has 'Snowtown' be re-named 'The Snowtown Murders' for a US release?

I own the disc that was released in the United Kingdom. Vinegar Syndrome's releases usually look fantastic. I'm hoping that this new disc looks better than the U.K. disc. The slipcover is really cool -- the barrel and the blood. Thank you for commenting.

The compression on the Vinegar Syndrome disc is better than the disc that I purchased from the United Kingdom a few years ago. The slipcover is cool. I haven't watched the special features yet.

It's an excellent film -- very, very authentic. If you read the details of the actual case, the filmmakers stuck to the facts. The film moves very slowly...a lot like the snake in the terrarium that finally eats the mouse. The first half of the film is a "slice of life"...but the second half shows the snake -- John -- killing and devouring the mouse. Thank you for commenting.

Anyone know if the VS release is the same as the UK 101 Film in terms of picture quality?

I own both discs. The Vinegar Syndrome disc is superior. There is no smearing or micro-blocking pixels. The colors are similar (if not identical), but the grain is better.

Kenneth Brown's Blu-ray review https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-S...372152/#Review

Great film that definitely did not need a stupid name change.

The slipcover from Vinegar Syndrome says, "Snowtown," not "The Snowtown Murders." I agree that "Snowtown" is a better title.
