Default National Lampoon's Vacation Sequel/Reboot

Quote:
Dave Dobkin Talks About Upcoming 'Vacation' Sequel/Reboot

With director David Dobkin’s The Change-Up opening in a few weeks, I was able to get on the phone with him yesterday to talk about the movie. While I’m embargoed from writing a review…I will say that The Change-Up is extremely funny and the last time I laughed that hard in a theater was Bridesmaids. Definitely recommended.

Anyway, towards the end of the interview, Dobkin gave me some updates on his King Arthur movie and also what’s up with the Vacation reboot/sequel which he’s producing. While I knew his King Arthur movie was a priority at Warner Bros., I had no idea they were already casting and they’re planning on filming this January in London.

On producing the Vacation reboot, Dobkin told me:

Quote:
“Oh my God dude, this script came out so good it’s crazy. It’s not a total reboot by the way, it’s a reboot of the franchise but it’s Rusty’s story. It’s not trying to start again from zero.”
He went on to say they aren’t sure if they’re going to go to Wally World, how the movie is about how you make the same mistakes your parents made, how they’re about to start casting, and he wouldn’t confirm or deny that Chevy Chase will be a part of the cast (I think he will be). Here’s a choice quote:

Quote:
“Look one of the things I love about the original movie is comedies overall do not stand up over time, the sense of comedy changes in each generation, but Vacation is still as shocking and as funny as it was when it was made. There’s stuff in that movie that you would think was insane today: “Daddy taught me how to French kiss,” I mean there’s just things that are insane, it’s off its head. So that’s why I went for it, cause I really loved it and I just love the themes of that movie.”
I'm actually looking forward to this. Hope we see Grandpa Griswold in it!

Yeah, I definitely get that. But it's nice to see it has potential seeing as it's actually a sequel, but also a reboot since it's centered on Rusty and not Clark. But the possibility of Grandpa Griswold already makes me laugh.

This NEEDS to happen, and Chevy Chase has to be in the cast. The original National Lampoon's are the best!

I love how the author of that article cites that while laughing during the Change-Up he hadn't laughed that hard since Bridesmaids. Aren't those movies only like one month apart, lol, he acts as though it'd been years since he had a good laugh. Anyways, wonder if they would get Anthony Michael Hall to return as Rusty, I think that would be pretty great.

I would prefer Johnny Galecki. That would make this a must-see for me

Fraud charge
On September 24, 2009, Quaid and his wife were arrested in Texas for allegedly defrauding an innkeeper, burglary, and conspiracy in California. The arrest stemmed from an earlier incident in which the Quaids had allegedly left a Santa Barbara, California hotel with a balance due of approximately $10,000. Even though they had later paid the entire bill, the two were still arrested on September 24 and released on bail later that evening. The Quaids made arrangements to appear in court in Santa Barbara but failed to do so. On October 29, the Santa Barbara District Attorney's Office requested bench warrants for their arrest and extradition from Texas.

Although subsequent arrest warrants were quashed, after the Quaids failed to appear at court on April 12 and 13, 2010, $40,000 in bail was forfeited and arrest warrants for the couple were issued again on April 14, 2010.

The Quaids appeared in court with their attorney Robert Sanger on April 26, 2010 after missing several other court appearances. The Quaids were briefly detained in custody on April 26, 2010 and released after processing. On April 28, 2010, Sanger resolved the case with Senior Deputy District Attorney Arnis Tolks. The case was dismissed against Randy Quaid for lack of evidence. Evi Quaid pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of defrauding an innkeeper. She was granted probation for three years. She will also be required to serve 240 hours of community service.

Burglary charge
On September 18, 2010, in Santa Barbara, California, Randy Quaid and his wife faced burglary charges. They were reported as living in a guest house without permission. They claimed that they had owned the property since the 1990s although a representative of the property owner had called the sheriff's department and produced documents that showed the house as being sold to the current owner in 2007. The previous owner had purchased the property from the Quaids several years earlier. The Quaids are being accused of more than $5,000 worth of damage that is claimed they caused to the guest house.

They were booked for felony residential burglary under section 459 of the California Penal Code (459PC), and misdemeanor entering a non-commercial building without consent (602.5 PC). Evi Quaid was also booked for misdemeanor resisting arrest (148PC). Their bail was set at $50,000 each. On September 19, 2010 they posted bail and were released.[18] TMZ reported that the Quaids claim that the home was wrongfully transferred to a third party by the use of the forged signature of a dead woman named Ronda Quaid in 1992.[19] On October 18, 2010, bench warrants for the Quaids were issued following their failure to appear for a hearing on the burglary charges.[20]

Refugee status
On October 22, 2010, Randy and Evi Quaid sought protection under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, after being arrested at the US-Canadian border in Vancouver B.C.

They have since applied for refugee status on the grounds that they fear for their lives in the United States as numerous actors have died under mysterious circumstances committed by the "Hollywood star whackers".[22] They were granted bail on the condition of $10,000 bond pending further Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada hearings.

However, due to their inability to deposit the required bond with the court for several days, they remained in custody of the Canada Border Services Agency. They were released on October 27 after the discovery that Evi Quaid is a "prima facie Canadian citizen".

On July 15, 2011 an attempt to extradite Randy and Evi Quaid from Canada failed when the U.S. Department of Justice turned down a request from the Santa Barbara County district attorney calling for the Quaids to be returned to California to face the felony burglary charges dating from Sept. 18, 2010.

I'm game for this on the condition the Chevy Chase and Beverely D'Angelo come back as grandpa and grandma. Would love Randy Quaid too, but that seems highly unlikely (maybe they'll film part in Canada or something, lol). I don't just want cameos though. They have to play a key part in the movie.

My favorites in order:
1. Vacation
2. Christmas Vacation (I probably watch this one the most though)
3. Vegas Vacation
4. European Vacation

Maybe Grandpa Clark will be like Grandma in the first movie and he'll ride around in the backseat with them.

The complaints are well-deserved as this seems to be a new disease out there in the film industry. Just wait unitl they reboot or remake the wrong thing - then ya'll will be complaining too.
It's a sequel, but its also a reboot because its not about Clark. Not sure how its hard to understand.

As for remake, yes there are some that are unnecessary, but this isn't even a remake so the complaints aren't needed. The only reboot I'm pissed about is Evil Dead, but its for more reasons than the fact that they're remaking it. But that's for another thread.

Ed Helms Could Star in 'Vacation' Sequel/Reboot

Crank up “Holiday Road,” a new Vacation movie is on the way. The writers and directors are set, and it’s time to talk casting. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) are writing and directing the reboot/sequel which will follow Clark Griswold’s now grown-up son, Rusty, as he takes his own family on a vacation just like dear old Dad. And while it would be near impossible for someone to fill Chevy Chase’s shoes, the front runner to do just that is Chase’s current NBC colleague, Ed Helms. Read more after the jump.

The news of the casting comes from the popular celeb blog Perez Hilton, who says Helms is “in the lead to take over the National Lampoon reigns” meaning he’s not yet signed, but is at the top of the list. Also, this film doesn’t seem to have a National Lampoon tie-in.

Helms, who got his big break as a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has blossomed into a major star in the last few years thanks to his role on NBC’s The Office and in The Hangover films. He’s on his way to top-line status too, with films like Cedar Rapids and Jeff Who Lives at Home gaining solid indie buzz.

Vacation though, as it stands, will not be a small movie. It’s set up at New Line, a division of Warner Bros., and you just know they’re hoping for another comedy franchise as The Hangover will likely end next year. Plus, the original Vacation spawned multiple sequels, thanks in large part to Chevy Chase’s massive star power in the 1980s. Helms has that kind of potential.

Rumor originally had it that this new Vacation would have Rusty taking his family to Wally World before it closed, much as happened in the original film, but there’s no word if that’s still the vacation destination. I really hope it is though.

Do you think Helms is ready to headline a remake/sequel like this?

Update: Ed Helms Has Not Been Approached To Star In ‘Vacation’ Remake

Update from Editor Peter Sciretta: Apparently this report has been confirmed false. Ed Helms tells The Playlist that while he is a big fan of the Chevy Chase classic Vacation, he doesn’t know where the rumors originated (Perez Hilton…) and has yet to be approached for the project:

“I have no idea where that bubbled up. I don’t know where that came from. It’s nothing I know of.”

has to be Anthony Michael Hall.

In all of the other sequels I found myself wishing the kid playing Rusty was him.

Ed Helms in Talks to Star as Rusty Griswold in VACATION

It looks as if Ed Helms will be playing Rusty Griswold in New Line’s Vacation after all. Rumors swirled earlier this year that Helms would be taking on the lead role in the continuation of the Vacation franchise, but when Steve asked him back in March if he was involved with the film he said he hadn’t had any conversations about the film. Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein signed on to direct their own script back in February, and now Helms has officially entered negotiations to star.

Though he denied having any conversations about joining Vacation back in March, when Steve told Helms he’d make a perfect fit to head up the Griswold family, he responded thusly:

“Well it could be, I suppose. I understand that project is afloat, but I don’t know where I fit into that right now.”

Variety now reports that Helms is in talks to star as Rusty Griswold, as the story finds him handling the misadventures of a family of his own. Producer David Dobkin told Steve that this Vacation isn’t an entire reboot of the series, it’s just Rusty’s story. If Helms’ deal closes, the plan is to start production early next year after the actor wraps The Hangover Part III and the upcoming season of The Office. In the meantime, New Line would like Daley and Goldstein to cut the script down a bit in order to lower the budget.

As Steve said earlier, Helms seems like the perfect choice to head up the new Vacation. It’ll be interesting to see what actors they surround him with to fill out the cast, but Daley and Goldstein are on a roll following Horrible Bosses. They’re working on Horrible Bosses sequel, scripted the magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone with Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, and they wrote the upcoming Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.

Seems like a good choice for the role, although Im expecting it to be terrible. Horrible Bosses was kind of lame and forgettable. Love when Hollywood hands something that could potentially be good to some lame writers. It's amazing someone is paying these guys. Might as well just put Adam Sandler in this.
