In early announcement to retailers, Magnolia Pictures has indicated that it will release on Blu-ray acclaimed Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia's highly anticipated Balada triste de trompeta a.k.a The Last Circus (2010), starring Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Carolina Bang, and Manuel Tallafé. In 2010, the film won Silver Lion and Best Screenplay Awards at the Venice Film Festival. Street date is October 18th.

1937, Spain is in the midst of the brutal Spanish Civil War. A "Happy" circus clown is interrupted mid-performance and forcibly recruited by a militia. Still in his costume, he is handed a machete and led into battle against National soldiers, where he single handedly massacres an entire platoon. This absurd and disturbing scenario raises the curtain on a twisted tale of love, revenge, and psychopathic clowns that could only spring from the mind of filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia.

Fast forward to 1973, the tail end of the Franco regime. Javier, the son of the clown, dreams of following in his father's career footsteps, but has seen too much tragedy in his life - he's simply not funny and is only equipped to play the role of the Sad Clown. He finds work in a circus where he befriends an outlandish cast of characters, but as the Sad Clown he must take the abuse of the brutish Happy Clown Sergio, who humiliates Javier daily in the name of entertainment.

It is here that he meets Natalia, a gorgeous acrobat, and abused wife of Sergio. Javier falls deeply in love with Natalia and tries to rescue her from her cruel and violent husband, unleashing Sergio's jealousy. But Natalia is torn between her affection towards Javier and her lust for Sergio.

With neither man willing to back down, this twisted love triangle evolves into a ferocious battle between Sad Clown and Happy Clown, escalating to unbelievable heights in this absurd, shocking, irreverent and unforgettable film

It's too bad this movie isn't getting more pub. Just watched it tonight via netflix and definitely plan on adding it to my collection.

I think the DVDtalk review guy said it best: "Hand to God, you could pause The Last Circus at pretty much any point, slap a frame around it, and hang it on your wall."

So true. The visual creativity in the film is a marvel to behold. It's also very dark, a bit twisted, and completely surreal. Suffice to say, I loved it~

Holy Crap, just saw the trailer for this and ordered it right away! Why hadn't I heard or seen anything about this before??? ... I guess the fact that there are only 8 posts here might mean something... but whatever, looks awesome!

I always loved this movie. Can't believe it's been 8 years since it was released. I speak Spanish, so the English subs were turned off. Its a great piece dark and demented macabre.

Noticed the north american (only english friendly version I can find) clocks in at 101 minutes and the german releases by koch media are 111 minutes.

Anyone know if these are different cuts or is there something else (like a misprint) occuring? Want to be sure before I buy.
