Default Combo discs not abandoned by WB for HD DVD

Hey,

Maybe it seems off topic but WB has stated they are not giving up on Combo discs for HD DVD. This is huge news for BluRay. Combo discs aggrivate HD DVD users becaus they cost more and usually don't play back without problems.

Boiling them can solve the problem if you know about that and are willing to do it.

Anyway,.. I saw those things as giving a very unfair advantage to Blu Ray and I'm so happy to see they aren't being abandon-ed just yet.

It's on the Bits

Likely combos are required by their contract for the first runs

Does placing the HD-DVD discs in boiling water at high altitudes (such as Denver) work with the lower boiling point at higher elevations? And should salt be added to the water before dunking the disc? Can HD-DVD discs be colored like Easter eggs? These are interesting questions that haven't occurred to me as a Blu-ray customer.

Mods,

I don't mind if you move this to off topic,.. I was just thrilled about the news and wanted to share to the biggest crowd.

Those Combos are working. People pay top dollar and invite friends over to watch a movie and then break down and watch the SD side (actual user experiences reported on another forum.) Those have to make a good case for the format without the bugs.

I personally don't see what is bad about a combo. You ensure that for the time being you have a movie that will play on all players that you own. What is so bad about that?

while you have a valid point there and i agree with you , the problem with combos is that they cost more and alot of people have reported problems with them not working.

There's nothing bad about it. It's a great idea, if you could watch the HD side.

On general principle I can't stand two-sided discs. Brings back flashbacks to the early days of DVD when flippers were common - widescreen on one side, standard on the other. Or worse... watch the first half of the movie and then have to take the disk out and flip it for the second half.

Not only that, I hated having to examine the fine print by the hub hole to read if the side was "side A" or "widescreen". Especially when the lights are dimmed down for watching movies. And don't get me started on having to keep both sides fingerprint free...

Whenever I rewatch one of my older DVD's (not everything has been released in blu yet) that use two sided media it makes me very glad dvd evolved beyond that point.

Instead of evolving and moving forward, HD-DVD has devolved back 10 years to "flippers" to produce their combos. (I am sure this is part of the frustration from the HD-DVD side as they now have discs that are visually identical to the first generation dvds.)

Just my 2 bits...

I 100% agree like when i was taking one of my dvds out of its case that was double sided where one side had the movie and on the other was the special features and so i was saying to myself now how do i take this dvd out without putting any fingerprints on it? I had to literally carry the dvd on my shirt and then had to gentally put the dvd into the dvd player without ruining it to much of a hassle if you ask me and plus i know blu-ray movies are kind of like finger print resistant and scratch resistant

collectors like myself enjoy having screened disc art. true 99.9% of the time you don't see the disc art, but knowing they're there, makes it even "gooder" as president bush would say. also, as stated by other members, flippers are incredibly tacky and expensive to produce adding to the price of the endproduct. it completely annhilates the price advantage the claim. when software prices are the same, what else? hardware? when you can only buy one brand, toshiba, which most people i know don't find reputable, you're screwed. the lowest end toshibia doesn't even go 1080p! but that's another story. reinstated: combos suck.

in a word:

FAIL

They cost more ot produce.

And well, they also have a higher tendancy to not play on any player.

The best reason for us to be happy is that they cost more. Reliability issues might at some point be answered.
