I believe this is a kind of "Bram Stokers Dracula" and "Last of the Mohicans" case. Those two titles made many speculate that the black level were "off".
How many make that call watching screenshots? Monitors contrast levels are usually not very reliable. I have a calibrated 24" HP screen. Brightness is 7% to get it close to D65. But contrast is not more than 2-3.000 on such a screen, making it totally unreliable to trust the cinematic experience. The Pioneer Kuro 9 generation has excellent blacks, the X9 has 1:100.000 native and in a dark room, those two movies and Gattopardo looks absolutely stunning. Last of Mohicans is so dark, that subtitles during nightscenes makes it impossible for the eyes to get accustomed to the darkness, because the light seems so bright. But without, it's like being there. I would say these blu-rays are future proofed and will show more and more of their inherent qualities, as equipment gets better and black levels improve. |

I received the Australian disc today. No black level issue and the screencaps I took look like the French disc with slightly different colors.
compare to andreasy969's caps of the Italian disc: ![]() ![]() ![]() compare to French caps hereL: http://criterioncast.com/2010/12/05/...e-restoration/ ![]() ![]() and one to match both the Italian and French caps: ![]() Subs are pale yellow and appear outside the image frame (partially inside when its two lines). This disc looked rather excessive, in terms of saturation while the elevated black levels were far too much. Grain is ok but does not seem to swirl entirely organically either while the sound had a harshness to it that was a tad unpleasant.
Speaking of The movie itself, I assumed because of my Italian lineage on my dad's side, and my general appreciation for family epics that it would be up my alley. But it was not. Felt as long as it was. The emotional pull wasn't there in the least, its subject matter only occasionally engaging. Yeah, the ballroom scene, I guess there is some meaning in there, something about the Lancaster character regretting Passing into oblivion as a new era looms but I didn't feel this was conveyed succesfully. I just had the distinct impression it was just folks dancing and talking for 45 minutes. Although the rooms and clothing looked rather opulent I guess. |

I know this is old and probably no one cares, but I managed to get hold of the Japanese release (already had the Criterion one). With a -2500ms shift the subs and commentary from Criterion fit perfectly the Japanese version. You see the subs appear and disappear on exact scene changes.
The JP disc doesn't have any additional logos baked into the movie stream (starts with "funding by Gucci...) so that delay probably applies to other releases from the same source. Love the movie, gorgeous visuals. Glad I could make myself a "proper" version at least. |
