Good news! Laser Video is indeed one of the most popular publishers in Russia. Hopefully soon we will be able to import some of the best Russian movies as well.

Again, HD-DVD is pretty aggressive there advertizing lower cost of entry for their format. However, this makes even less sense in Eastern Europe than it does here in the States.

Those who can afford HDTV sets and HD media releases, will certainly not be excited by cheap Toshibas and more so by cheap Chinese off-springs. Those people want the best of the best and they get. Here comes Laser Video with their releases.

Those who cannot afford the move to HD right now will simply stay with the DVD players and SD DVD movies, thanks to the abandant supply of SD DVDs at dirt cheap prices over there ($2-3 per movie).

So, unless HD-DVD changes their strategy, they are doomed for failure there. Russians like to say "I am not that rich to buy cheap stuff"

...and knowing how the "new Russians" like everything to be top of the line (they only drive Mercedes, BMW, Aston Martin, etc) I am quite positive they would go for a brand name. At least from what I see in the Chicago area these people have and spend A LOT of money. Not sure how they make them...but it is a fact!!
