Default Microcosm: 5 Movies That Define Your Collection

If you had to define your collection, what are the titles that best reflect what your collection represents as a whole?
Do you favor certain genres? Older films vs newer ones? Independent vs. Mainstream?

These aren't necessarily your five favorite movies or the five best blu's. Just ones that serve as a good example of your tastes.

If I had to pick five that best reflect mine, they would be:

My tastes skew more mainstream, most of my collection is 80's and later, and genre-wise it's quite eclectic. Specifically,

Star Wars: Sci-Fi and modern classics (Sure wish I could put Indiana Jones here as well!)
Die Hard: Loud, awesome action flicks. (This one being the greatest action film of all time)
Goonies: The classics of my youth
Beauty & the Beast: Love for good animated films, especially ones my kids enjoy with me
Moulin Rouge!: My softer side - Musicals & Romance. I have a fairly eclectic collection with genres all over the board - For every Die Hard, there's a Moulin Rouge

I see 10 films there.

I'd go with Munchausen (though I'll replace it with Brazil on this list once released); Pinnochio, Strangleove, 5 Easy Pieces and Speed Racer.

I was primarily referring to New Hope and the first Die Hard, but those are the actual covers in my collection.

The Lion King: Animated / Disney films
Harry Potter: Fantasy films
Tron Legacy: Visually stunning / Purely entertaining films
Inception: Mind-bending films
War of the Worlds: Alien Sci-Fi films

Sucker Punch and Black Swan are also really good contenders for mind-bending films in my collection.

Transformers - Big action, loud effects, pure enjoyment

Lord of the Rings - Fantasy

Iron Man – Superhero genre

The Hangover – comedy, something to sit back and laugh at.

The Matrix– a movie w/all around enjoyment.

These define my collection pretty well and the kinds of movies I enjoy.

5. Harry Potter films

Baraka - Such a beautiful, meaningful film that looks great on Blu Ray.

By Brakhage - represents my love of interesting, ground breaking, boundary pushing cinema. It's also a criterion release, of which I have many. Also, I wish there was more non-narrative, or "experimental" cinema on blu. I do also have the Jeff Keen and Kenneth Anger collections.

The Evil Dead - not only due to my love of horror films, but also due to my love of low budget, grind house and exploitation movies. Evil Dead seems more appropriate on here than Poor Pretty Eddie for example, which I was thinking of putting on.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest - Unlike the other films above, this is a studio film with stars and I obviously have a ton of other films that fit that mold (as do almost everyone on this site) but this has been one of my all time favorite films for a very long time.

The Seven Samurai - Another favorite, plus it's a foreign film and I have a fair share of those in my collection.

1. Battle Royale - The BD that sent me into the world of Importing. Once you start you never come back.

2. I Saw The Devil - My collection is not for kids. I have 2 PG movies out of 175 titles (Citizen Kane & The Karate Kid) I.S.T.D. is as intense as they come, and I love every minute of it.

3. Pale Flower - There is not a more stylish BD out there. My love of B & W BD's intensified 1000% after viewing this masterpiece.

4. Memories of Murder Second Pressing - When it comes to receiving BD's in the mail, I have never been more excited as the day I finally got this BD. I had to deal with a scam AMZ marketplace seller, then I ordered it off of Ebay, and finally I had to chase the mailman down because he was scared to drop it off because of the neighbor's dog. I believe MoM is S.K. cinema perfection and I can't recommended it enough.

5. Smokin Aces - So I like Criterion's, Foreign, B & W classics, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy a good ole fashion shoot em up. This is the BD that I could watch every day and never get bored.

Great thread. My defining Blu Rays are:

The Lion King for nostalgia reasons
Repo The Genetic Opera: for my love for little known movies that shine brightly
Back to the Future trilogy: comedy action and great entertainment
Star Wars Complete Saga: I don't need to say why
Stand By Me: Next to Hook this is my favorite movie and having it on blu makes it all the better
