Default Who has scratched blu-rays :D

There's no doubt that blu-rays are incredibly scratch resistant, but I'd be hard pressed to believe that anyone with 200+ films in their collection don't have a single blemished disc in their collection

I take very good care of my discs, but I still have a number that have scratches on them. Some I notice months after I buy the disc... maybe I did it, maybe I just never noticed it...

As obsessive as I am about most other things (condition of slipcover/box even though I don't collect them, dents in steelbooks, condition of cover insert, etc.) I tend to be quite forgiving with scratches, as long as the movie plays through

Anyways, I have about 7 discs with blemishes

Rating them on a scale of 1-10 (1: Hairline, less than 1/4" long, barely noticable, shallow, 10: long, deep, very obvious, still no skips however, if a disc skips, it's garbage)

Alien 3 and one of the bonus discs - 4
Batman Returns - 1
Casino Royale - 1
Collateral Damage - 1
Dark City - 5
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones - 2
(The ones I rated 1 I swore I noticed a scratch before, but can't find them ATM )

Anyone else :P

Feel I should add this: I take incredibly good care of my discs. Of the 7 discs mentioned, 5 discs had marks upon removing them from packaging for the first time. The other two I may have caused myself. Why didn't I return these? Well, to put it bluntly, they just don't bother me enough to make me go through the hassle of returning them, and then there's always the chance that the replacement will be worse. Do I really want to go through it twice? three times? Just doesn't bug me...

EDIT: Now that I've thought about it some more. I can confidently say that all 7 discs were not scratched by mishandling on my part. Alien & Star Wars I blame on the North American packaging, Batman, Casino Royale & Dark City were scratched upon inspection for the first time, Collateral Damage I just noticed last night, but I've only played the freakin' thing once

My only scratched Blu-rays are some of the BBV 5 for $20 ones I got. How do people scratch something they only have for a few days? I have movies and games on my shelf for years, and they still look flawless. But these people rent a movie for 2-3 days, and scratch it. No big deal though. They all work fine.

Really?! Even held up to a bright light and everything?! Absolutely no marks.

I'm guessing you've taken your fair share back because of scratches?

I haven't scratched any of my 493 blu's. The only 3 I own with 1 or 2 light scratches on them are disc 2 of The Fellowship of the Ring EE, Rambo 1st Blood, and Back to the Future 3, which were all bought brand new like it. I exchanged those discs at the retailers where I bought them a few times (I couldn't see the scratches under the fluorescent lighting in the stores, but could instantly under my lighting at home) as every copy from the batches they had in stock had scratches on them (obviously accidently caused in the manufacturing process) and ended up settling for the best discs amongst the batches they had.

I had the same problem with my back to the future, pirates of the carribean and nightmare on elm street boxsets. I teat my discs with the upmost care, and these discs came this way. I'm sure it's the way they are transported

Not me dood. My Blu-ray discs including PS3 games are well treated with love and care. Even the over 500 dvds I own have no scratches unless it was pre-owned by someone else and even then that's considered rare to find.

Maybe 5? (can't remember which, but mostly pre-viewed ones from Blockbuster, Hollywood Video or GoHastings).

It surprises me just how bad some people handle DVD/Blu discs (maybe because they're rentals?). Even digital copy discs (which should be used.. once?) have been completely mangled.

Fortunately Blu "Takes a beating" much better than the other formats (and can be cleaned or will work perfectly).

I have a big HDDVD collection, and those scratch easily and don't do well with scratches (freezes/skipping, more than DVDs)

Minus BBV or used products bought, mine are tip-top. I work at a used movie store, and actually came across a Blu-ray disc that had TONS of hairline scratches over the surface in the right light, and the customer exchanged saying it wouldn't play. How people scratch discs, let alone Blu-rays, is beyond me. Kids would be the obvious reasoning, but some of the people I come across trading in... Yeah. Lol.

When I had over 700 films in my collection, not a single one had as much as a speck of dust on them. I have approaching 150 again and same situation, perfect condition. I don't let ANYONE touch my discs, not even my wife. I've asked her to do it a few times and she was surprised. Hundreds of Cds, thousands of DVDs not a scratch. Pride. I am a collector and take damn good care!!!!

Just had a quick look at a few BD's that I have had for awhile and I have lots of finger marks over them, guess I am just careless in regard to handling them, then again I tend to put cd's face side down on occasions as well

A tiny scratch on The Bank Job, and Pinocchio's DVD (came with BD) and Ponyo also scratched (noticeable).

I don't know why, it was brand new sealed, maybe at the fabric or wherever they packed it weren't careful enough with the discs, at least the DVD I don't use it at all, thank god the Blu-ray Disc came scratchless.

For Pinocchio I got a refund, but Ponyo have to look into it, as I've just gotten the Blu-ray recently.

Scratched Blu-rays

I bought the 'Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection' seven disc set used from Amazon in "good" condition, and disc one had just the smallest faint scratch that you really had to look for to see it, and disc five had a pretty deep, but tiny scratch near the very outside edge of the disc. Both of them played flawlessly. I only paid $40, so $5.71 per disc, so I am satisfied.

I also bought an open-box blu-ray player a while back, and when I got home and hooked it up and opened it, it had 'The Perfect Storm' blu-ray disc in it. Free disc! It was absolutely beat to shit. I mean, it almost looked like someone had scrubbed it with sandpaper. I watched the entire disc, and it played flawlessly. I really couldn't believe it, going by how the disc surface looks.

As far as I know, those are the only ones I have with scratches on them.

Well, I kind of assumed that everyone on this forum takes the "utmost care of their discs"

That certainly hasn't prevented scratches in my case some things are just beyond your control, no matter how careful you are

I haven't had the Star Wars or Alien Anthology digibooks scratch any discs. I think their potential to harm discs was greatly exaggerated.

Agreed, after reading this thread I went and inspected my star wars and Alien blu ray sets, I've got scratches on 4 OF THE STAR WARS DISCS! And 3 of the alien discs, on the Alien discs its nothing major just small "scratches" that look more like dots, its odd, anyone seen these types of scratches/dots yet?

The Star wars sets actually looks like real scratches and I am taking it back to Best Buy tomorrow morning seeing as how I bought it yesterday.

I admit I was a bit foolish when it came to putting my dvds back in the cases..but I treat blu rays like priceless works of art..I take them out of the player every time and put them in the case delicately, especially considering my collection is so small at this point. I've noticed it takes a lot to make a blu scratch anyways..smudging is easier so I make sure to let me fingers touch anything but the edges.

You're not cool unless you have one scratched blu-ray.
